Stephen Smith Obituary

Stephen Brian Smith passed away peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, September 15, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was 63 years old. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Deborah Segler Smith, their two sons Stephen Daniel Smith and Michael Brian Smith, as well as five siblings, Chuck Smith (Beth), David Smith (Patty), Mark Smith (Lynette), Karen Moshtaghi (Mo), Greg Smith (Kathleen), his sister-in-law Dee Lieberg (Jerry), his Aunt Joyce Remsberg, and Uncle Ronnie Smith, along with numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents June and Charles Smith and his sister Donna Harvey.

Steve was born in Charleston, SC where he graduated from Bishop England High School and the College of Charleston. Throughout his school years he participated in almost every sport, developing deep and lasting friendships while learning the values of loyalty, integrity, humility, and hard work.

Steve and Deborah were married in Charleston, then moved to Greenville, SC in 1993 where Steve developed a passion for leadership & service in the commercial real estate sector. For thirty years he has been a significant figure in the industry, most notably as Managing Director for CBRE, where he has spearheaded operations for South Carolina markets since 2014.

Above all Steve was a committed Christian and devoted husband and father. His love for his wife, Deborah, was unwavering and as a father he was a source of support & guidance for his sons. Whether supporting their sports and endeavors or offering words of wisdom, Steve was always present in their lives, leading by example and instilling in them the same virtues that defined his own life. His role as a father was his greatest joy and his love for Daniel & Michael was immeasurable.

Steve's success was not merely a result of his expertise but also of character. He was known for his faithful leadership and cultivating a familial culture of support and growth among colleagues and in his community. He was a servant leader at heart, someone who lifted others up while pursuing excellence himself.

His hobbies reflected his active and disciplined nature. An early riser and avid runner, he embraced life's challenges with vigor and resilience. Throughout his battle with Parkinson's and cancer, Steve's unwavering spirit, strength and grace remained constant. He was able to find joy and peace in the companionship of family and friends who never stopped visiting, and his steadfast faith knowing that this world is not our home.

Steve was actively involved with numerous community and real estate related organizations and Grace Church on Pelham Rd., Greenville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Steve's honor to Front Porch Housing (frontporchhousing.org/give) or Grace Church at grace.sc/give.

The Smith family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the friends, neighbors & caregivers who provided constant support during Steve's illness. A special thanks to Maria & Tracy who showed so much love & compassion as they cared for Steve daily.
