Robert "Rob" Roland Mallard, Jr.

Charleston - Robert "Rob" Roland Mallard, Jr., 66, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest Sunday, March 8, 2026. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Thursday, March 12, 2026 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 115 Broad Street, Charleston. The Rite of Committal at St. Lawrence Cemetery will take place at a later date.

Rob was born in Charleston and raised in the West Ashley area, eldest child of Hon. Robert "Bobby" Mallard and Ruth Hills Mallard. He attended Blessed Sacrament School and graduated from Bishop England High School (Class of '77). Rob played for the Battling Bishops throughout high school and was a starter on the 1976 Lower State championship team.

Rob attended Newberry College for a year, then moved back to Charleston and eventually to Edisto Beach, where he worked as a shrimper and in other areas of the seafood industry. Moving back to Charleston, he worked for White Stack towing for several years. He then moved into construction work, eventually starting his own general contracting company with his wife Virginia. As their business prospered, Rob invested in properties, notably James Island Business Park.

Rob was married to Virginia Tinnell for 22 years, and they have a son, Robert Roland Mallard III. As a family they loved to travel, especially to the Florida Keys, and to fish and swim. Rob loved to take family trips in their RV, including trips to Colorado, Niagra Falls, and the annual father-son miniature golf trips to Myrtle Beach.

Rob's favorite holiday was Halloween, and he delighted in turning their home into a slightly-scary wonderland for neighborhood children and adults alike. Rob loved being outdoors. In addition to fishing, he also enjoyed hunting and boating and bike riding with friends. He also enjoyed cooking outdoors on one of his many grills and smokers, especially his renowned pork shoulder with homemade Carolina Gold sauce, which he would distribute generously to friends at Christmas.

Rob was blessed with an insatiable curiosity about people, nature, and life in general. He amassed a great amount of knowledge that he expressed in conversations and creative projects.

Rob cared about the greater community and world, and supported efforts such as Habitat for Humanity and Operation Home with his time and resources.

Rob loved music, and sang in the Cathedral Choir, journeying to Rome to sing for Pope St. John Paul II. He also traveled with friends to countless Rolling Stones concerts and was treated recently to a day with Stones musical director/pianist and former Allman Brothers member Chuck Leavell at his Georgia tree farm, where Chuck serenaded them with "Sweet Melissa." Rob was also an occasional guest singer at Buddy Morgan Band rehearsals.

Rob is survived by his son, Robert Roland Mallard III, his sister Rose "Sissy" Mallard, and his brother Patrick Mallard, all of Charleston. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Tim and Scott.

The family wishes to thank Ms. Betty Louis and Mr. Ignacio "Ricardo" Galvan for their constant help and friendship to Rob.
