Marcella Cass Obituary

Marcella M. Cass Charleston - Marcella (Marcey) Murphy Cass, 95, widow of John Herschel Cass, Jr., passed peacefully from this life into heaven on July 26, 2018. The relatives and friends of Marcella M. Cass are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 6, 2018, at Nativity Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 4:00 and 6:00 PM, Sunday afternoon at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. The Rosary will be recited at 4:00 Pm. Online condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Marcey was born March 6, 1923, in Charleston to George Patrick Lawrence Murphy and Lucretia Mary Rowand Murphy. She graduated from Bishop England High School in 1939. Marcey was a long time member of Nativity Parish on James Island and previously St. Mary's and Sacred Heart Parishes in Charleston. She worked for many years as a professional secretary, first at the Charleston Navy Yard in the beginning of her career and finally retiring from Roper Hospital as a secretary in their Dietary Dept. Marcey was a lover of life, laughter, music, and song! She loved all of her family very much and leaves behind fond memories to strengthen and sustain them. Marcey also loved travelling with her family, and took the opportunity to do so whenever she could. She was a perpetual optimist, always looking on the bright side. You could always count on her for a few sage "words of wisdom" to enlighten and entertain. Marcey was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, John H. Cass, Jr.; her five sisters, Lucretia M. Nowak, Eleanor M. Soubeyroux, Mary M. Robinson, Gertrude "Trudy" Moore, Marie M. Shorter; her brothers, George P. L. Murphy, Jr. and James J. Murphy and two nephews, Frank (Soupy) Soubeyroux, and John W. Robinson, Jr. Marcey is survived by her three daughters: Charlotte Cass Beck (Tony), Annette L. Mayhofer (Lance) and Suzanne Cass Westendorff (Kevin); two granddaughters: Charlotte Katherine Beck and Laura Murphy Mayhofer; a step-granddaughter, Cherie Westendorff Smith (Ryan), three step great grandchildren: Olivia, Henry and George Smith and many loving nieces and nephews.
