William Berrie Obituary

William Paul Berrie
AIKEN- William Paul Berrie, 99, beloved husband of the late Mary Carnell "Nell" Derrick Berrie, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2023 in his home.
A 3rd generation native and lifelong resident of Aiken, William was a son of the late William Ernest and Minnie Cato Berrie. He was a proud Navy veteran and loved telling stories of his time serving in World War II. He served in the American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and Philippine Liberation.
William was a retired electrician and was proud that he wired many of the old Aiken stores and homes. His earlier years he loved camping, boating and fishing. Although small in stature, he always had to do a big man's job he would often say. He lived his entire life on Pendleton Street and was often referred to as "The Mayor of Pendleton Street" William loved walking his dog around downtown Aiken, and loved meeting new visitors and telling stories of old Aiken. He enjoyed watching the sunset from his front porch and would often say "well, I made it another day, God's been good to me". He was a lifelong member of St. John's United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his children, Deborah Berrie Coriarty, Columbia, Paula Berrie Clayton (Barry), Aiken, William Ernest Berrie, Aiken, Mary Berrie Daniels (Dr. Larry Daniels), Aiken; grandchildren, William Shawn Harvey (Britney), Michael Berrie Harvey (Jessica), Hope Elizabeth Cornelius, Sarah Coriarty Crisostomo (R.C.); great-grandchildren, Jared Harvey, Jayden Harvey, Jayse Harvey, BaiLee Harvey, GraiCee Harvey and Zander Crisostomo. In addition to his beloved wife of almost 75 years, William was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin E. Berrie and twin sister, Willa Berrie Dorr.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening May 4th from 5 until 7 o'clock at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Friday afternoon May 5th at 2 o'clock in historic Bethany Cemetery with The Rev. Dr. W. Timothy McClendon officiating.
The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate, caring service and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. John's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 809, Aiken, SC 29802 (www.stjaiken.org) .
