Sam's name always comes up in family conversations of best/favorite teachers. My mother (a teacher) always remembers him as the one who always called his students on Sunday before an exam to make sure "we were giving him some of our time." I'll remember him for being demanding yet fair, praising when merited but not coddling. As a man who called them as he saw them he will be missed. As for myself, a U of MD alumnus, he was the only Duke fan I could stand.

I worked with Sam for 25+ years at AACC. He was such a wise, educated man. He had such a big smile, but always maintained that little boy "devilish" grin. We shared conversation, humor, daily events, and lunch together over the years. Rest in peace Sammy...I will miss you.

I was shocked when I received a phone call today from Weezie of Sammy's passing. We have kept in touch by e-mail for several years - him always asking about my mother. He kept me up-to-date about Bruce and his family. He was so proud of his niece and nephew. My prayers are with his family

I was sad to hear of Sam's death. He and I wrote quite a few emails in the past couple of years. He was a fine friend as I knew him in High School. His sense of humor and bright smile will always figure in my memory of him.

Please know that our prayers are with you all as you grieve his home going.

Several years ago I received an e-mail from "Sammy" asking if this was the Linda Phillips who was his first grade girlfriend, which indeed I was. We enjoyed exchanging e-mail messages and sharing memories. I am very saddened at his passing, and my thoughts and heart go out to his family.

Sammy and I go back to the old St Andrews Homes (the Project) in the late 40's and early 50's. I am saddened at the loss of this dear friend. We lost contact after High School. Through the internet we were able to again renew this friendship and catch up on the absence years. Sam, you will be truly missed.
