Sally Murray Obituary

Sally Ross Murray HANAHAN - Sally Ross Murray, of Hanahan, SC, widow of Glennie Wesley Murray, entered into eternal rest on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2014 at Trident Medical Center. Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 4, 2014 in the J. HENRY STUHR INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road at 11:00 am. Entombment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 3, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Stuhr's Northwoods chapel. Sally was born November 21, 1933 in Blackville, SC, the daughter of the late William Garlin Ross and of the late Azilee Miles Ross. She loved to tell the story of soldiers headed to war throwing change to the children from the train, and of the time a rooster got stuck in the family's outhouse, only to be removed and eaten for dinner. She moved from Blackville to North Charleston at a young age and graduated from North Charleston High School. Sally went on to earn her Bachelors (Class of 1960) and Masters (Class of 1975) degrees in Education from the College of Charleston, an extraordinary accomplishment at the time for a mother of four children. As an undergraduate at the College, she was proud to have played for the women's basketball team, the Maroon. Sally's teaching career spanned 28 years, beginning at Murray Vocational High School where she met the love of her life - Glennie. She also taught at Charleston High School, Remount Road Elementary, and Hanahan High School. She held a special place in her heart for children who struggled academically, placing great importance on a child's efforts in evaluating their progress. As an American Government teacher, she knew the laws of this land like no other and took pride in sharing her love of America and civic pride with her children, who she believed were the future of this great country. She embraced and instilled in her children the North Charleston High School motto, "Education is a possession in which man cannot be robbed." Sally is survived by her daughter, Renee Murray Moeller (Mike) of Hanahan, SC; three sons: Glennie Wesley Murray Jr. (Carole) of Little Mountain, SC, Mark Ross Murray (Karen) of Hanahan, SC, Richard Kent Murray (Martha) of Hanahan, SC. She is survived by two sisters Gwen Ross and Betsy Ross Hinson (Mike) and sister in law Bonnie Brown Ross (Jimmy). She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Garlin Ross and James Angus Ross as well as a sister in law, Shirley Dobbins Ross. Anyone who knew Sally was aware of her eleven grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as "Granny." She was proud to tell anyone who would listen about Annie Murray, Emily Moeller, Grace Murray, Jacob Murray, Madison Moeller, Chase Murray, Payne Murray, Ashley Rowell, Matt Murray, Vance Rowell and Will Murray. While in her care, her grandchildren would rarely, if ever, hear the word "no." They were always in her arms, and as all knew, a baby had to be held when taking a nap. Sally was blessed to have special family members Martha Clark and JayCee Ross provide her with love and care during her final years. Sally was a United Methodist for much of her life, but a member of Highland Park Baptist Church in her later years. She instilled the belief in her children to serve their communities, for whom much is given, much is required. She made the best peanut butter balls and pickles in the Lowcountry and fed countless children which made sense, since her kitchen was always open. Sally was a devoted wife to her husband, Glennie. In later years, when Glennie was stricken with Alzheimer's and placed into a long-term facility, Sally would visit him daily, sometimes twice, to help look after him. Many were the hours she spent by his side, caring for the man she adored and loved deeply. It was this love and devotion that had served as a model for their children and grandchildren, and it is that love that is her legacy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hanahan Cares Foundation (Hanahan High School, 6015 Murray Drive, Hanahan, SC 29410), an organization created by her grandson Jacob to assist Hanahan students and families in need of financial assistance. I was so sorry to hear of your Mother's passing. She was such a special lady with a sweet soul. She was by far my favorite teacher from HHS and I have many fond memories of one particular Economics class with Kent. Poor Kent couldn't get away with anything in her class! She will be sadly missed. My prayers go out to the entire Murray family.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. Her obituary prompted me to remember her talents as a teacher. She taught my nephew in summer school one year and showed a very loving interest in this academically challenged student. Her guidance and concern pulled him through. As his aunt, I appreciated all she did for him. She was a wonderful, dedicated teacher who touched many lives.

My sincere condolences to your family,
Mary Catherine Cutrell
