Ruthie attended Girls High in Anderson before earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Education from the University of South Carolina. She later earned a Masters in Education and Education Specialist degree from The Citadel in 1980, graduating with a 4.0 average.

Following her graduation from USC in 1957, Ruthie worked for Trans World Airlines as a flight attendant based both in San Francisco, CA and New York. She then began her 37 year career as an educator joining the Garrett High School faculty as Business Education Teacher, from 1966 to 1993, serving as department chair for over 15 years. During her tenure at North Charleston High School, she served as the school's representative on the Charleston County Business Education Committee.

Upon her marriage and move to Charleston, Ruthie became a member of Grace Church Cathedral. A dedicated member, she proudly served on both the Flower Guild and Wedding Guild and enjoyed volunteering in the Tea Room and Mouse Boutique for many years.

Her civic and social activities included membership in Pi Beta Phi Sorority, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society (Beta Chapter), The Ladies Benevolent Society, Charleston Garden Club (Honorary Member), Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, The Colonial Dames XVII Century, The Hat Ladies of Charleston and serving as docent for various home tours for the Preservation Society of Charleston and Historic Charleston Foundation.
