Patricia Wayne Obituary

Patricia Wayne GREENSBORO, NC - Patricia "Pat" Johnson Wayne, 94, of Greensboro, NC, passed away peacefully at home on February 2, 2023. She was a warm and loving lady with a friendly smile for everyone. Pat was born in Portland, OR on July 8, 1928 and spent many of her formative years in California, moving to South Carolina for her high school years. She graduated from General William Moultrie High School in Mount Pleasant, SC and then attended the University of Oregon for one year. She transferred to the College of Charleston, where she became a lifelong member of the Chi Omega sorority and graduated in 1949 with a BA in Chemistry. Pat was the wife for 72 years of Hugh S. Wayne. She was the daughter of Cmdr. Arthur and Zeta Johnson of Charleston, SC, and the mother of four children: Patricia (DeWitt) Blackwood, Hugh Wayne, Katherine (Richard) Byrd, and Thomas (Mary Beth) Wayne. She was the grandmother of Elizabeth Blackwood, William (Sara) Collier-Byrd, David (Rebecca) Blackwood, Ben (Tia) Byrd, Abigail Clark, Sarah (Tyler) Wood, Kristen and Norah Wayne. She was the great-grandmother of Mac and Ada Byrd, and Josiah Blackwood. She was beloved by all. Pat and Hugh married in Charleston, SC on September 28, 1950. As the wife of an engineer, she moved often. Life became interesting quickly with the arrival of her four children. She was very involved with her children's school activities, Girl Scouts, substitute teaching, sewing, and her true love - reading, which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. As the children grew older, she became a classroom teacher in Gloucester, MA. She taught in several elementary schools in that school district. She and Hugh retired to Charleston, SC. They enjoyed traveling together, working on their respective family histories, and volunteering in the Charleston County public and private schools. She was active in Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Indian Wars, Daughters of the American Colonists, and Colonial Dames XVI. To be closer to family, she and Hugh recently relocated to Greensboro, NC. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother (Lee Arthur Johnson) and her son (Hugh Arthur Wayne). A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tamassee DAR School, P.O. Box 8, Tamassee, SC 29686.
