Joseph Tamsberg Obituary

TAMSBERG, SR., Joseph GEORGETOWN - Joseph Lane Tamsberg, Sr., 91, longtime resident of Georgetown, died on June 20, 2005, at Litchfield Beach. Mr. Tamsberg was born in Charleston on May 23, 1914, the son of the late August William Tamsberg and Martha McKeown Tamsberg. He graduated from Charleston High School in 1930. During his working life, he was manager of Georgetown Building Materials, Inc. and later broker-in-charge of O.L. Bruorton Real Estate. Mr. Tamsberg was an active member of First Baptist Church of Georgetown for more than fifty years, where he served as chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School and Training Union director and teacher, church treasurer, chair of the Church School Committee, as well as chair of numerous other committees. He also served as moderator of the Southeast Baptist Association and as a Trustee of North Greenville Junior College. In 1981, he and Mrs. Tamsberg represented the South Carolina Baptist Convention on a month-long mission trip to Puerto Rico. Mr. Tamsberg's community activities included serving as chair of the Georgetown City School Board for sixteen years, Chair of the Board of First Federal Savings and Loan, President of the S. C. School Boards Association, Chair of the Georgetown Higher Education Commission, President and 55-year member of the Georgetown Lions Club, and volunteer with Helping Hands. His integrity and his willingness to give of himself to family, church, and community were an inspiration to many. Mr. Tamsberg is survived by: his wife, Mable Koth Tamsberg; three children, Susan Tamsberg Wise and her husband Roy Thomas Wise of Atlanta, Ga., Joseph Lane Tamsberg, Jr. and his wife Anne Ford Tamsberg of Georgetown, and Martha Catherine Tamsberg of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Dr. Kristin Rebecca Wise and Mary Catherine Wise, both of Atlanta, and Joseph Ford Tamsberg and Christopher Lane Tamsberg of Georgetown. Funeral services will be held at four o'clock Thursday afternoon, June 23, 2005 at First Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted A. Sherrill and the Rev. Hiram L. McElrath. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home Wednesday evening, June 22, 2005, from six until eight.
