Doris Spaulding Obituary

Doris Arlene Voss Spaulding DURHAM, NC - Doris Arlene Voss Spaulding, known to her friends as Dorie, died March 10, 2017, from complications of Alzheimer's. She was 87. She was born on Jan. 11, 1930, in Pontiac, MI, the only child of Berkley and Mary Voss. She was a graduate of Stephens College and before becoming a homemaker, worked as a reporter for the style section of the Pontiac Press. Dorie was the consummate hostess. She also loved design-ing new spaces and had ample opportunities to do so in the many places she lived, from Michigan, New York, Germany and finally South Carolina. She lived in the Charleston, SC, area for over 30 years, making many dear friends and adopting the hospitality she found in the South as her own. Dorie nurtured a life-long interest in and talent for an ele-gant, yet fun sense of style, earning accolades in many style journals throughout her life. But it was the individual lives she touched with her charm and hospitality that endeared her to many. She was ever the perfect hostess and loved to entertain. Her keen eye for interior design, coupled with her culinary skills as-sured that visitors were welcomed into delightful surroundings with the promise of a great meal to follow. She and her guests enjoyed her prowess at the piano, and memories of many impromptu songfests around her favorite piano survive her. Dorie's eye for style extended to clothing and ac-cessories. She often would recall the ensemble she wore to each party or event, of which there were many. Dorie supported many organizations throughout the years ranging from Historic Societies to, most recently, programs at the College of Charleston. In 2011, her support and contributions to the College of Charleston's School of Business were formally recognized on the Wall of Honor. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Gerald M. Millar, her second husband, Dr. George G. Spaulding and his grandson, Michael Spaulding. She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Millar, and husband, Bob Bury, of Durham, NC; her son, Mark Millar, of Cary, NC; and her grandsons, Nick Bury and Ben Bury, both of Charlotte, NC. She also is survived by George's three children, daughter, Cris Rogers, and husband, Perry, of Scottsdale, AZ; son, David Spaulding, and wife, Pat, of Midlothian, TX, and daughter, Mary Spaulding, of Centennial, CO; George's grandchildren, Megan Spaulding, Crissy Preston (husband Michael), Jimmy Spaulding (wife Alayna), George Spaulding (wife Jeni), Victoria Spaulding and Wick Spaulding and four great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers in Durham at Seasons at Southpoint along with Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance Co; and in Mt Pleasant, SC, the staff in the Memory Care Unit of Franke at Seaside. A celebration of Dorie's life will be held at 3 PM on Saturday, June 10, 2017, in the Wells Fargo Auditorium located in the College of Charleston School of Business, 5 Liberty St., Charleston, SC 29424. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Dorie's memory be made to the Dorie & George Spaulding Scholarships, The School of Education, The College of Charleston, 66 George St, Charleston, SC 29424. Dorie was one of the first friends I made when I moved to Charleston. She taught me to buy clothes from Carlyle and Worth; she even sold me some of her clothes, elegant suits which I still have. We had many fun times together. I remember a lovely dinner with Dorie and George when she served pasta, and we finished the evening with songs around the piano as she played for our music-making. A lovely, live-affirming person who spread joy wherever she went.
