David Goin Obituary

David Neville Goin SUMMERVILLE - Entered into the church triumphant on February 26, 2010, David Neville Goin, age 66, of Summerville, SC. Family and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on Friday, March 5, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Dorchester Presbyterian Church, 10290 Dorchester Road, Summerville. The family will receive visitors immediately after the service in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be private. David was born in Gainesville, Florida, the youngest son of Sanford Goin and Elisabeth Henderson Goin. He was predeceased in death by his parents, his brother Newbold Crittenden Goin and his sister Mary Elisabeth Goin. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 38 years, Jan Muller Goin, of Summerville, his brother, Sanford Goin, Jr., and his brother's partner, Stark Smith of New York City, his sister-in-law Eleanor Muller Crosby (Mrs. David Friddle), of Conway, SC, his nephew John Muller Crosby and his wife Sherri, of Florence, SC, his cousins Penny Hughes Chappel (Mrs. Arthur), of Lakeland, FL, Rosemary Hughes, Marie Hughes, and Charles Hughes of Tampa, FL, Virginia Price Black (Mrs. Hunter) of Morehead, KY, Tom Price of Florida, Lynda Goin Richmond (Mrs. David), and CJ Goin of New Mexico. David was a 1966 graduate of the College of Charleston and was a member of Alpha Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. He loved the college and his fraternity brothers with whom he has had many longstanding friendships. Most recently, David was employed by Pearson Professional Testing in North Charleston, where he served as a test administrator. He had retired in 2005 from the Berkeley County School District where he taught middle schoolers. From 1974 to 1995 he was owner/manager along with his wife of Jan Goin Gallery on King Street in downtown Charleston. The gallery exhibited some of Charleston's most notable artists including Steve Jordan, Betty Anglin Smith, Eva Carter, Bill Jameson, Manning Williams and Linda Fantuzzo. In 1989, as Hurricane Hugo roared through Charleston, the first regional exhibition of paintings by Lowcountry artist Jonathan Green hung on the walls of the upstairs gallery. Not a painting was damaged. David was a man of great faith and optimism that earned him the nickname "Mr. Positive". During his year-long illness, he continued to be an inspiration of strength and courage to those around him. The family wishes to express its profound gratitude to the staff of nurses, doctors, and chaplains of Roper Hospital who attended him with such care, the staff of Kindred Hospital who helped him in transition, Roper Home Health nurses and therapists who made his life at home more meaningful, and the staff, nurses, and therapists of Heartland of Charleston (Hanahan) who cared for him in a home-like atmosphere. Memorials may be made to Dorchester Presbyterian Church, 10290 Dorchester Road, Summerville, SC 29485 or to the charity of your choice. Jan, I was so sorry to hear about David. He was always so caring about everyone and willing to help in anyway that he could. We carried each other's lesson plans to Marrington and shared rides to and from school as needed. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to know him. You are in my prayers.

David Goin is one of my boyhood heroes. Growing up together in Gainesville, Floirda, I learned at an early age to look to David for leadership and wisdom. His friends and classmates could always count on him to show the way and brighten any occasion. I will miss him. Our deepest condolences go to Jan and his family.

Jan,

I am so sorry for the passing of David. My heart goes out to you.
When David was at Marrington, he always wanted to help friends. He wanted to do something for my daughter who was engaged to be married in June thirteen years ago. He wanted to do the program for her wedding. He helped me out so much. He was such a giving man.
My condolence for your loss.

Jan,
I am so sorry and didn't know David had been sick. I think of you both often (and your mother!) and it always brings a smile to my face. You were both so good to me and I loved working at the famous Jan Goin Gallery. Know I am thinking about you and hoping you are OK.
