Willard Wagers Obituary

Willard Penn Wagers, age 70, of Summerville, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family and friends.

A man of deep faith, Penn was a devoted follower of Jesus, letting his love for the Lord guide him throughout his life. His family was his greatest joy and his proudest accomplishment; he was a steadfast presence who modeled integrity, hard work, and unconditional love for his children and grandchildren.

A lifelong entrepreneur, Penn possessed an energetic spirit and a visionary mind. Throughout his career, he built numerous businesses across diverse industries, including insurance, marine sales, marine manufacturing, real estate, and banking. He approached every venture with the same tenacity and commitment that defined his personal life. Penn was a man of great joy who loved to sing and dance, especially when his favorite Elvis Presley songs were playing.

For most of his life, Penn was a fixture on the football field. His passion for the game led him to a distinguished career as a referee. He diligently worked his way through the ranks, starting in SCISA and advancing to officiate in the Big South Conference, Sun Belt Conference, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Southeastern Conference (SEC), and NFL Europe. His dedication to the sport earned him the respect of players, coaches, and peers alike.

Penn Wagers is survived by his wife, Marcie Wagers; his children, Missy Young (Jody), Penny Connor, Devin Taylor (Sara), and Jake Taylor (Christy); his grandchildren, Bryson Connor, Gavin Young, Wyatt Young, and Elizabeth Taylor; his siblings Beverly, Paula (Alex), and Harry (Susanne), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss his guidance, his humor, and his unwavering support. Penn was preceded in death by his grandson, Cameron Connor, and his parents, Willard "Fritz" Wagers and Margaret Pennington Wagers, among many other family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cameron Connor Foundation. All funds received in his honor will be used to support youth in the community in his memory. Penn worked his first high school game with me in SCISD in Charleston in I think 1972. He was a fine man and I knew then he would potentially be a very good official. Even at a young age, he was a man of great principles and I always enjoyed being with him on our trips to games. May you REST IN PEACE old friend and God bless his family.

Family
I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Penn from officiating football and considered him my friend for over 30 years. I really appreciated our time together on the football field or the golf course and just hanging out with the guys. Rest easy now Penn!
