Charles David Grant Obituary

Charles David Grant

N. CHARLESTON - Charles David "Bobby" Grant, 87, transitioned from this earthly realm into Eternal Life Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in the comfort of his home. Born and reared in the Liberty Hill Community of North Charleston, SC. He was the son of the late Reverend Charles Augustus Grant, Jr., and Albertha Telfare Grant and the great grandson of Ishmael Grant, one of the Founders of Liberty Hill.

He was the beloved husband of Gwendolyn Holt Grant and the father of five (5) children: Charles Daryll Grant; Cary Randolph (Danette) Grant; Valerie Stacey Grant; Craig (Erica) Jackson; and Veronica Pendergrast Singleton.

Bobby was a devout Christian who believed that God is not only in charge but also in control. In other words, Let Go and Let God!! One of his favorite Scriptures was Proverbs: 3:5. He was a member of Shiloh A.M.E. Church, located at Meeting Street, North Charleston, SC. His smile was infectious and, his motto in life was, "live, laugh and love."

The family has received personal testimonies from some of the soldiers of Bobby's generation who have told of his generosity, kindness and service.

Bobby was blessed to obtain a diverse educational and employment life. He graduated from Bonds Wilson High School in 1956 (a school that was built on the land owned by his great grandfather, Ishmael Grant) and from Allen University in 1960 with a degree in Elementary Education. He also obtained graduate credit hours from South Carolina State University.

Upon graduation from college, Bobby taught for several years in the Andrews, Summerville, and Hollywood School Districts. After leaving the educational system, Bobby became one of three African Americans employed by the South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) as a bus driver. Eventually, he held a supervisory capacity with SCE&G after 18 years of service.

He was predeceased by his sisters Rachel Grant Mitchell and Mary Lou Grant Murrell.

Bobby leaves to cherish his memories his wife, children and sisters: Mrs. Marva Dell Grant Ivey; Dr. Lucinda Grant Griffin; Mrs. Etta Diann Grant Ferguson; and Mrs. Margaret Grant Carter. He also leaves to cherish his memory thirteen (13) grandchildren and countless nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

A Special Thanks and God's continued blessings to: two nephews; Wayne Raynard Mitchell and Steffon Mitchell who stuck with him from beginning to end and Roper Hospice, Hospice Nurse Shanoah Planter, RN.; Housecalls MD; Humble Beginnings Home Care, EBAC Home Care; Caregivers Devonna Stanley, Keneisha Campbell, Latonya Deveaux, and the Pastor and Members of Shiloh A.M.E. Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Charles Bobby Grant's name to the upbuilding of Shiloh A.M.E. Church, 3570 Meeting Street, North Charleston, SC 29405

Yesterday

My thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of bereavement. I pray that God will continue to bless you today and years to come. I had the pleasure of meeting Bro. Grant once when the church family welcomed him into our church family. He was smiling so much with me as if he knew me for quite a while. Continue to cherish the precious memories that you shared and let them be a comfort to your hearts.
My condolences & love,
Cynthia Brown (Shiloh AME Church)
