William Waring SUMMERVILLE - William Hayne Waring entered into eternal rest on January 18, 2024. The beloved son of Richard George and Marie Hamilton Waring, Hayne was born at his parents' home on South Main Street in Summerville on April 27, 1929. He was a direct descendant of Benjamin Waring, founder of one of South Carolina's first families, who settled on the banks of the upper Ashley River in 1683 near present-day Summers Corner. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, which his family helped establish back in 1706, when it was known as St. Paul's Stono. Hayne was very proud of his family lineage and spent his life honoring it in all that he accomplished. Hayne attended Summerville High School, where he played football for legendary coach Harvey Kirkland. He was one of the last surviving members of the 1948 football team who won the school's first state championship. In 1950, he was drafted into the Army and served in combat during the Korean War, having earned three service medals upon his discharge. He returned to Summerville, where he met and married the love of his life, Patricia Ruth Winters. In 1953, upon the encouragement of his cousin, the late attorney, Nick Hamilton, Hayne enrolled at the University of South Carolina on a GI Bill in hopes to follow in Nick's footsteps. Not long thereafter, he withdrew from USC to go to work and support Patsy and their infant son, Penny, who was born on September 26, 1954. Hayne was a quiet servant of the Lord, who was defined by hard work and dedication to his family. In the late 1950s, he drove a truck for Sonoco Products in Hartsville, and after the birth of his first daughter, Pam, he moved backed to Summerville, where he started his own hauling business with just one dump truck, one employee, and a couple of shovels. He would eventually purchase a fledgling garbage business that opened in 1960 as Suburban Disposal Service, which became one of the largest solid waste disposal companies in the tri-county. Hayne was unapologetically a self-made man. Having grown up by humble means, he built his first house in the 1960s on Golf Road from an old horse lodge. He and Patsy raised their five children in their modest home, where they welcomed their children's friends and treated them as family. He was a father-figure and role model to many young Summerville boys who grew up to be community servants and leaders in Summerville, including his special nephew, former Mayor Ricky Waring. He also treated his sons and daughters-in-law as his own children, and they all will attest that with that distinction came tough love and intense manual labor. Hayne sold Suburban in the late 1990s and was able to spend many years gardening, fishing, completing numerous pet projects, furniture making, golf-cart riding, vacationing at his homes at the Edisto River and Folly Beach, picking Johns Island tomatoes, sharing some boxed wine with life-long friends and acquaintances, celebrating, laughing, and enjoying the fruits of a long life well-lived with his greatest legacy - his family. In addition to Patsy, his loving wife of 72 years, Hayne is survived by his five children: William Hayne Waring, Jr. (Cindy); Pamela Waring Jameson (Larry); Esther Waring Wells (George); Jan Waring Woods (Jim); Christopher Stevens Waring (Michelle), all of Summerville; 11 grandchildren: William Hayne Waring, III (Molly); Robert Vanderhorst Waring (Samantha); Claire Jameson Kabine (Chris); The Honorable Lawrence Grover Jameson, III; Joseph Patrick Waring; Bradford Jonathan Waring (Erin); Charlotte Wells Timmons (Tyler); James Alfred Woods, Jr.; Jennings Waring Woods; Jacob Stevens Waring; Ashleigh Sims Waring; 11 great-grandchildren: Anna Claire Kabine; Emma Kabine; Christopher Kabine; Ellie Kabine; Caroline Waring; Wiley Waring; Annesly Waring; Blakely Waring; Rory Timmons; Wells Timmons; Bryson Waring; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, who he all loved dearly.
