William Smith Obituary

William M. "Billy" Smith NORTH MYRTLE BEACH - William M. "Billy" Smith, 67, passed away Monday, September 7, 2009 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center peacefully following an extended illness. Billy Smith was born in Marion, SC, the middle of five children. He enjoyed the small-town atmosphere of his childhood, when "downtown" held most opportunities for activity. Billy's family saw every new movie that came to town, and he credits this experience with his love for the movies today. His mother would take the kids to nearby Myrtle Beach on Sundays after church. The pavilion and boardwalk hold special memories for him. After all, it was there that he was first charmed by rhythm and blues music. These early records, played on jukeboxes up and down the boardwalk, caught not only his ear but his intrigue as well. He never heard this kind of music on the radio back home in Marion, and he wondered why. The local record store in Marion became a favorite after-school activity for Billy. He saved and spent every dime he made from his paper route on records by R & B Doo-Wop groups such as the Cadillacs, Flamingos, and the Five Satins. Today, of course, this music is credited as the precluder to "beach music". Billy also started hanging out at the local radio station, WATP AM. He was fascinated by Scott Simms, one of the broadcasters. The folks at the station recognized his interest was genuine and allowed him to have a Saturday morning slot. Calls poured in from listeners..."What IS this music he's playing? Why doesn't he play any music by white artists?" After all, they were used to Elvis, Pat Boone, and Perry Como. His controversial career in radio was off to a running start! Billy's dad, a building contractor, built a miniature radio studio on top of The Dairyette, a local diner in Marion; and Billy began broadcasting his own show, "The Dairyette Show" on Sunday afternoons. Just like a scene from "Happy Days", teens would ride by in their Chevys and hang out in the parking lot. His love for broadcasting was cemented! In 1964, Billy left Marion for Wilmington, NC and accepted a position at WGNI. A year later he moved to Myrtle Beach and worked at WTGR (Tiger radio), where he remained for the next six years. He was thrilled when he received an offer to move to Charleston to work at WTMA. It was the largest radio station in South Carolina, and Billy had listened to it for years. Ironically, one of his fellow broadcasters at WTMA would later reemerge as a coworker in another setting...Ted Bell!Returning to the Grand Strand in 1973, Billy has remained at Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach ever since. He went to work for Bill Norman at WNMB (yes, it's the same building 94.9 the Surf is in today!) where he remained for the next 15 years. He has worked at Power 98, which became Mix 97.7, where his longtime friend Terri Springs was his co-host. After a 2-year stint at Cool 104.9, Billy joined 94.9 the Surf in 2002.Billy loves his morning slot on 94.9 almost as much as he loves all the lady listeners telling him that they enjoy "waking up" with him every morning! He perhaps laughs the loudest at his comedy bits. As with all the broadcasters at the Surf, he cherishes the phone calls and emails from our servicemen all over the world. He knows how blessed he is to love his work and play the music that captured his attention and heart half a century ago. In addition to Scott Simms at WATP in Marion who gave him his first professional opportunity, Billy credits "Clarence the Whip" as his mentor. Clarence worked in the 50's at WYNN in Florence. An African-American broadcaster, Clarence used "hip talk" such as "hey baby" and other Ebonic expressions that Billy has incorporated into his own personal style of broadcasting. Among his favorite interviews are conversations with Jackie Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves, and Billy Stewart. He's still waiting for the one he admires and loves most of all...Smokey Robinson. The recipient of many accolades over the years, Billy received "Beach Music DJ of the Year" award in 1981, the first year of the Beach Music Awards Show, which set the stage for the Cammy's (now CBMA). He was selected for this honor again as "FM DJ of the Year" in 2005 by the CBMA. He was inducted into the prestigious SC R&B/Beach Music Hall of Fame by Governor Jim Hodges in 2001. Seems he's not only a legend in his own mind after all.In his spare time, Billy enjoys meeting his friends for their "Music Club" where they scour the satellite jukebox for old, obscure music. He also enjoys reading and going to movies. He considers life on the Intracoastal Waterway at North Myrtle Beach as "Paradise" and has little desire to travel elsewhere. He and Kay soak in the sunset with their new puppy, Bo Diddley, and watch the boats go by, cherishing each day."Hello Stranger" by Barbara Lewis remains his all-time favorite beach music song. Surviving are his daughter, Kimberly P. Longwell (Brian) of Summerville, SC; five brothers and sisters, Betty (Frankie) Johnson of Georgetown, SC, Richard (Jean) Smith of Murrells Inlet, SC, Donald (Cathy) Smith of Murrells Inlet, SC, Levoy Smith of Mullins, SC and Eugene (Lena) Smith of Mississippi; Kay V. Maddox, his girlfriend, with whom he made his home; Bo Diddley his beloved pet; and numerous other relatives. Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Rhedin and Maude Richardson Smith and a sister, Bobbie Smith Ricks. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2009 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home. Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Humane Society North Myrtle Beach, PO Box 3369, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582. Kay request that if anyone has special memories of Billy, please mail them to 94.9 The Surf, PO Box 3689, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582 so a Memory Book can be made for his daughter, Kimberly. Still ever so grateful for his kind heart, & how he went out of his way to promote our music on the Grand Strand. Left us way too soon. Without Billy & Ted Bell, the station will never be the same.

To my friend forever...Even though I only had the priviledge of knowing him for a few years..Including DJs in Pittsburgh, Pa., Billy was bound & determined to make us a hit on "The Surf". EVERY morning starting his show with "our" Star
Spangled Banner. Playing our hits everyday. MOST OF THOSE PRETTY YOUNG
GIRLS, & I LOVE ONLY YOU made the Cashbox SMOKIN' 45 for 2008 I would say
because of Billy, & Ted Bell. When he would play I LOVE ONLY YOU he would always go"ba ba ba ba BABY when the song ended mimicking me. He was the greatest. Not only as a DJ, but as a friend. I still ply his interview he did with me. He was quite a character.
We will always love him deep in our hearts.

Today while driving something on the radio reminded me of the great times we had while Billy was at the helm doing one of his signature Saturday BSBPs.....I often thought since his passing....nearly five years ago now.....how different my life would've been in High School and College....without hearing those great shows he orchestrated and his marvelous cast of airwave characters ....it was as if he was The Wizard of Oz...of radio......what great Frat Parties we held listening to him as the opening act for Crazy Zacks on Saturday nights.....his shows made the summers longer.....the winters shorter.....the beer colder....and the girls prettier......He was an Icon to people my age who grew up in the 1970s....I distinctly remember His Beach Club on Highway17 near OD.....coldest beer box on the planet! His voice will forevermore be a constant memory of great times while growing up along The Grand Strand!....I miss that ole rascal!

I worked with Billy at WLAT in Conway and he was certainly all that has been said about him. His gimmick with the guy going to get him something and Billy telling him not to slam the door, and invariably the door slamming should be in the hall of fame with a button to push to 'play the whole routine'....... I went with him on several remotes just for the fun of it...

He has a legion of friends and will be sorely missed!

I worked with Billy at WNMB in '81. What a crew...Dick Biondi and Billy Smith made NMB a Major Market operation and those two never failed to make everday life in an already beautiful city even more-so. Billy was the originator of the "Dead seamen" bit. If you haven't heard it, find it somewhere. I'm sorry to hear this news, especially so long after the fact. Broadcasting will miss Billy Smith, as will so many people who had their days "Made" by him.

I can add little that hasn't already been said. I did, however have the pleasure knowing and working with Billy at both WTGR, Tiger Radio and WNMB, North Myrtle Beach. I remember when I started at WTGR Billy took me under his wings and showed me the ropes. He always had time to work with the younger guys coming into the business. Back in the day, we always ran into some of the biggest artiest in the business and Billy would always make sure that the newbies were introduced to the artiest. I remember meeting Frankie Valli and the four seasons. in their heyday. They were at the Beach Club and after their show, one of the other tiger jocks introduced me to Frankie as "our part time jock" and I was so embarrassed. Billy spoke up and told Frankie that I might be part time, but I was one of the best new DJs he'd ever heard:) May you rest in peace Billy. I sure hope they have beach music in heaven!

What a talent and a genuine nice guy. I met Billy in person at DJ Throwdown in 2006. We were at Fat Harolds listening to the CWB. Billy treated me like an old lost friend. Billy's talent was the best. Living in WV you have to get up early to listen on line before you go to work. He was so natural and made beach music the only music to listen to. His knowledge, genuine talent and sincerity will never be duplicated for a long time to come. God Bless Billy Smith and his family. Thanks for all the music and the memories.

We have listened to Billy Smith and his crazy cast of characters such as the Right Reverend Billy Ray Causey, RD Neck, and Lewis of the Dry Heave Lounge for what seems like our entire lives. In September 1984, we enjoyed Billy's live, on-air hurricane party as Hurricane Diana finally made landfall after it wandered offshore for days which led to Billy's hilarious "Hurricane Warning Syndrome." We listened to his show that day in the car (electricity was out) and it sounded like so much fun, we packed up and went to the beach despite the winds and rain just so we could be a part of it! Billy, You were the best. Thanks for the memories--we'll never forget you.

So many people will miss you Billy. Not only for your great music but for your kindness, generosity and fun-loving personality.
It was a pleasure working with Billy during the mid 1980's at WNMB. Sometimes during his morning show, he would give one of the office staff a surprise call and joke with with them on the air. Billy was a little mischievous and we loved that infectious laugh.
Thank you Billy for all the memories!
My deepest sympathy to Kay and all the family.

Mr. Billy Smith was one of my favorite DJs growing up as a teenager in the 70s and as a college kid in the 80s. I always loved his comical sketches and funny phone calls on his radio shows at WNMB. I made frequent air checks on reels and have many fond memories. He was best at what he did as a veteran broadcaster and was great at his craft! It inspired me to go into broadcasting and he's a legend. He stopped by the local TV station one day (WGSE-TV 43)in the mid 80s to visit where I worked, and always was a jovial kind of guy. I never missed a chance to listen to Billy play those oldies but goodies on his shows. I remember the characters he created on the radio such as "Crazy Bob" and those FCC-Bending stories that made me bust a gut laughing! - Also, I have fond memories of going to Beach Music Center and plunking down a buck for that crazy novelty 45 rpm of "Ode To Rita". Many years later I would find a whole cashe of those records and have treasured that novelty record since! Billy, we will miss you very much and our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. A real legend and a fine DJ no one could ever replace!

We were truly saddened to hear of the passing of Billy. He has been a great friend and we will miss hearing him in the morning. Thanks to Billy, our daughter was named from his morning station. We had the privilege of letting him know this and a couple of years ago at the Crab Festival in Little River, my daughter was able to meet him and was told the story of how she got her name. We will always remember him and now our daughter will have something to remember in her life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. He will truly be missed.

I never knew Billy Smith on a personal basis. He was the morning DJ in North Myrtle Beach. Yet after two years of listening on line and when in Myrtle Beach I feel I knew him and "Baby Girl Kay", and Bo Didley as my own family.
He always made you laugh with his morning funnies, and loved going to the movies. Something that will always stick in my mind is the 7am National Anthem and when it was over Billy saying GOD BLESS AMERICA. No Billy Smith - God Bless you and your family in this sad time.

My memories of Billy go back when he worked at WTAB-AM in Tabor City, What was a country station turned into one of the best stations around. He was the first to predict that "Baby Love" by the Supremes would be their next hit after "Where did our Love Go". I continued my relationship with him and Dick Biondi at WNMB. I got Billy to play "The Pizza Song" by DIck shortly after Dick arrived. We all had a great laugh.
HE and Harold Bessent are very important to the reason Beach Music has survived. Thanks Bill!

In the 1960's Grand Strand Radio was The Big Ape from Jacksonville and The Mighty TMA from the Low Country before that little daytimer, WTGR 1520AM playing mostly, if not all, commercials during the Summer months made its appearance. There he was Big Billy, only a few years older, but he was "The Man" and whatever he played I used my last dollars to buy at The Beach Music Center laterthat day I when I showed up at WTGR with broadcast reverb gear in hand from WIST Radio's engineer room to bring reverb to WTGR like WTMA and WAPE used. And try like they might Don, Billy and Steve could not convince the owner to add reverb to the radio station. After all, the commerical log was full to the brim.

As the years rolled on, Billy arrived at WTMA, my new radio home, and we renewed our old relationship and over the years visited him at various Myrtle Beach stations.
It wasn't just knowing Billy Smith that made life fun. It was meeting people who knew him, somehow with their description of Billy as if they'd stolen your place in his heart. Little did they know unless they hung around for a while that this guy had a big heart with plenty of room and always plenty of time to revisit the memories. The number of responses on this site say it all. God Bless You Billy and all of us who knew you. Another chapter in life is over, but the stories will be shared until the Beach Music is played no more. See you later guy on the other side in Green Pastures.

Dear Kay and Family
Years ago I think Billy & Don worked at our local am station WLNC. They were quite a pair. Beach Music has really lost a great supporter and Billy will be missed. Sounds like he suffered greatly. But in that Beach Club in the sky he'll not suffer anymore.

I did get to know Billy later when I grew up and what a wounderful, kind, loving and funny man. John and I will miss him greatly. Billy Smith what a man, what a voice, what a radio personality!! As his career took him to various radio stations, our radio dial always seemed to follow him. Billy always said he had the best job in the world; listening to beach music and shagging right there in the studio. I remember one of his favorite things was to get in his convertible and ride down Ocean Boulevard. And one of my favorite things was listening to him on the air waves. He will be missed. My condolences go out to his family.

had a song in his heart for everyone !

Dear Kay and Family, I remember being so excited to secure a job in sales at WNMB in 1982! I had been listening to Billy Smith for years and would finally not only meet him but work with him! At the first live broadcast I sold, Billy was broadcasting and asked me a question...stuck the microphone in my face...I didn't miss a beat...he said, "Little Cathy, you're a natural." I credit Billy with giving me the confidence to never be shy around a microphone whether on radio or television...I have so many wonderful memories, I will truly miss the Legndary Billy Smith.

Kay, I am so very grateful to Billy for the love he brought to your life. I remember the phone call you made to me telling me that you had met someone very special. I remember meeting him for the first time and understanding why you loved him so much. In the days ahead, focus on the wonderful memories and joy that he gave to you. Love is eternal. I love you.

September 10, 2009

My condolences to Billy's family. I worked with Billy many years ago at WLSC in Loris. Billy was truly a legend. Whenever you think of beach music, you automatically think of Billy Smith. His beach party show on Saturday afternoon was the greatest. The last time I saw Billy was the past Spring whenever I stopped by the Surf one morning. I knew Billy was sick but listening to him on the radio, you would never have known. He was one of a kind that could make you feel so good just listening to him and his antics. He had the personality that a lot of people long for.

The BSer will be truly missed. My prayers are with his family. Beach music won't ever be the same without Billy being on the air.

I feel that a piece of the beach is gone.

Rest in peace, my friend.

My first experience with Billy was when I arrived in Myrtle Beach looking for a radio gig in early 1990, he put me on the air and to my amazement I was working with him months later on the POWER 98 Morning Show. After leaving the show in 1992 to move to California I kept in touch with Billy and always kept him deep in my thoughts. We have truly lost an amazing person and friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very emotional time. I too am feeling an emotional sadness with this news. My love to all.

Kay, Donald and Richard My deepest symathy goes out to you. Billy was like a brother to me. He practically lived at our house during those teen years. As a matter of fact, my brother, Albert Courie who is deceased, got Billy interested in radio announcing. My brother was a part time announcer at WATP Marion SC and Billy would go there with him in the afternoons and started announcing. I spoke with Billy several times lately and he always reminded me how much my brother meant to him. I hope he has joined his family now and is playing music in heaven. We will all miss his unique laugh and his wonderful personality.

I will miss my morning commute time listening to Billy. He really made my day. I remember the old days of WNMB with Billy and Dick Biondi. For more than 20 years, I've tuned in to hear my beloved beach music played by my favorite disc jockey. Billy truly was one of a kind. My mornings won't be the same without him.

I first met Billy while working at Fat Jack's for Bob and Nancy. We always had a blast when he did the live show at Sante Fe on New Years Eve. He always made us laugh. He was a real NMB icon. Our deepest sympathy for your family.

As I struggle to find the right words, I can hear Billy's voice calling me, "Little Cindy", I have to smile,'cause there was the man that taught me what Beach Music is all about, when I worked at WNMB in the 80's, running the board for "The Beach Party" at Fat Harolds and everytime I look at the Becky Stowe picture I had him sign, it always makes me smile. Our industry has lost a True Legend and I have lost a true friend and Mentor. He has touched so many lives and he will be missed!

I remember the first time me and my wife met Billy. It was down at Spud's on the Marsh walk, during one of his beach parties. I think we fought the bugs more than anything else, but we still had the best time with him spinning out the oldies. We began talking and pretty soon we were meeting him at every event he had. We had a blast at every single one of them too, whether it was at Dynamites, Spud's or the Marina Raw Bar! We will miss you dear friend, and may you rest in peace, and enjoy spinning those sweet tunes for all the others who've passed on! Kay, our thoughts and prayers are with you. May we all think more of the joy and happiness Billy brought to us every morning on our drives to work, than this dark day of beach music history. He will be missed. May God bless you and be with you through this Kay!

Music and Billy Smith were a significant part of our culture when many of us "Baby Boomers" were growing up along the Carolina Coast. I first met Billy at the Dairyette, but we didn't become friends until the mid-70's. So many of my fondest memories of the Beach have a "Six Degrees of Separation" feel connected by a larger than life radio personality that was Billy Smith. His love affair with music was truly special because he used his music to connect us--to himself and each other. Long after most of us were forced to grow up, get real jobs, and become responsible citizens, Billy refused to surrender. He never lost his passion for his music or his friends. Billy enjoyed the intimacy of the small stage, but his talent could have taken him to the nation's largest markets. Whether stopping by the station to say hello, meeting him for happy hour, or listening to him "work," we were privileged to have known him, loved him, and shared his special place in our sometimes troubled world. I'm envious of those who knew him better, but proud to have so many very special memories. From the early days at WATP and WTGR to the special years at WNMB and Power 98, Billy's following and reputation grew. While he loved R&B, he became a Beach Music icon. I never hear a Beach tune without giving Billy a silent toast. Like so many of his fans, my thoughts and prayers are with his loving family in their time of grief, but hope they can find some comfort in knowing that he touched generations of people in a very special way. Those connections and friendships will live forever. Surely, the Billy Smith Show's on and playing to a packed house. God bless you, Billy!

To Miss Kay, daughter Kimberly and all of Billy's brother's and sister's, my sincere condolences go out to all of you during this very sad time. Billy was always engaging, warm, cheerful and upbeat. I first met him at WNMB and enjoyed my friendship with him. Later on, he made some introductions for me at what was then WAVE 104 (now Cool FM I believe..) that lead to some business relationships and for that I was always thankful to him. He has now passed on to that greater microphone in the sky and we are all the better for have known him. God's Speed my friend and my best to all the family. Ray L Patterson, Charlotte

Kay , It is hard to say goodbye to Billy. It is hard to go to work and not see him first thing. I remember when you moved in with me we would go to the donut giveaways in our pj's. I remember when you fell in love with the Legendary Billy Smith. The humor wave length that put him in your heart! The many requests we made to hear his voice on the phone! Did we ever bug him! He loved you so much. The Surf will not be the same without him.

Billy and I worked together at Tiger Radio in the 70's. It was my first time as a general manager and I was a yankee to boot. I learned a great deal from him about how to handle talent. He led a great group of broadcasters; his brother Dr.Don, Bill Henessy, Uncle Stevie and The Freaking Deacon. My career took me back to DC as a radio GM and then group VP, Television group VP and I tried a number of times to place him at one of our stations but he would not leave MB. He was a great talent, a good father and a good friend to the Carolina Coast. He will be missed.........................Wyatt Thompson

Our hearts were so saddened when we heard the news of Billy's death. My husband and I did not know him but we feel like we have lost a good friend.

Billy Smith will be greatly missed and beach music has lost a great DJ ICON. When we are in NMB we always tune in to The Surf and when we're home we listen online. When Billy was broadcasting live beach parties he always made us feel like we were "in the crowd" even though we were 7 hours away.

There will NEVER be another BILLY SMITH!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire Smith family.

We are so sorry to hear about Billy passing!! Billy made the mornings fun and bright listening live at the beach or via the web. Our hearts go out to his beloved Kay and Bo Diddley. We know how much Billy loved them and how much they loved Billy. Know the Beach Music Family has you both in their thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time. Billy will be missed, but never forgotten! Puppy howel to Bo from Happy & Raydar.
