William McGee Obituary

William Allen McGee CHARLOTTE, NC - William Allen McGee, Commander SC, United States Navy (retired), of Charlotte, died on September 17, 2011. He was born in Charleston, S.C. on February 28, 1936, the son of William E. McGee and Mary C. McGee. McGee married Elizabeth S. McGee in 1959. He attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he received a B.S. and Harvard University where he received an MBA. He served for 21 years with the U.S. Navy, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, receiving a Bronze Star Medal of Honor for his courageous service. He moved his family to Charlotte to work with Nationsbank in 1979, retiring in 1991. In addition to his family, he loved music, reading, learning new things and most especially golf. He was generous in his community service, creating a back to work program with his church and spending many hours with Habitat for Humanity. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, his daughters Helen McGee of Santa Rosa, California, Dawn McGee of Missoula, Montana and Lynda O'Briant of Asheboro, North Carolina, son-in-law Patrick O'Briant and grandchildren William O'Briant and Hannah O'Briant of Asheboro. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday afternoon, time to be announced, September 20, 2011 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The First Tee, his favorite charity or Hospice. Carolina Funeral Service & Cremation Center is entrusted with the arrangements. Betsy, I am so sorry for your loss. I just learned of it today. I remember Bill with great fondness. I remember our times at Hilton Head Island together as well as our days at the bank. I hope that you and your family are well.

Betsy, "Spanky" was my best friend and neighbor when I was young and the last time I saw you both was at my wedding at the Naval Base. So sorry to have lost touch but think of you both when I drive through Windemere. I will always cherish his friendship.
