Ward Walter Obituary

Ward Charles Walter GEORGETOWN, SC - Ward Charles Walter passed away on 21 October 2020. Born 09 November 1960 to Merritt and Bonnie Walter in Painsveille, Ohio, Capt. Ward was raised on a boat and lived many places. He graduated from Catholic High school in Norfolk, Virginia and Old Dominion University. He taught one year of school, before taking to the sea. Ward was just 19 when he first captained the passenger schooner Norfolk Rover. During his long career he was Captain on several of the Rover passenger schooners before settling down in Georgetown, South Carolina, where he founded Rover Tours, operated the schooner Jolly Rover and Carolina Rover on day trips. His final business venture was Island Picnic Cruises, aboard the Sweet Tea to the outer banks on shelling trips. He is preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie Walter and his niece, Emily Walter, and survived by his father, Captain Merritt Walter, brother, Shon Walter, and nephew and nieces, Patrick, Melody, and Ellie Walter Nicknamed Captain Scrappy, Ward's enthusiasm for life lead him on many adventures to foreign ports and islands. A sailor's sailor, he was always ready to take to the sea for his trick at the wheel. He will be missed on the Georgetown water front. A memorial service was held and his ashes cast to the sea on Winyah bay, South Carolina. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

Looking up old friends And deeply saddened to hear of Ward's passing. I was a friend of Ward and his brother Shon about 69-70 when they lived at the Pembroke Square apartments a block away. Good memories and fun times hanging out. May you rest in peace buddy.
