Walter Cuthbert Obituary

CUTHBERT, Walter A funeral service for Walter T. (Tommy) Cuthbert, 58, will be held Tuesday afternoon, June 6, 2006 at 2 o' clock at St. Luke's Lutheran Church Summerville, SC. Internment will follow at St. Paul's Episcopal Churchyard. Friends may call at the residence, 714 South Main St., Summerville, SC Monday evening from 6-9 o'clock. Flowers will be accepted or memorials can be made to Odyssey Hospice, 3870 Leeds Avenue, Suite 109, North Charleston, SC 29405, St Luke's Lutheran Church Organ Fund, 206 Central Ave., Summerville, SC 29483, South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation, PO Box 286, Irmo, SC 29063 or Hollings Cancer Clinic, 171 Ashley Ave., Charleston, SC 29425. Mr. Cuthbert died Friday, June 2 at his home after a yearlong battle with lung cancer. Born in Summerville, SC May 10, 1948 he was a son of Grange Simons Cuthbert, Jr. and Dorothy Werner Cuthbert. His father, an accomplished golfer, taught him the game when he was six or seven and Tommy turned that love of the game into a career in the golfing business. Tommy won the S.C. Open in 1966, the youngest winner ever and after graduating from Summerville High School went to Louisiana State University on a golf scholarship. At LSU he set a course record in the collegiate golf tournament in Houston in 1965. He transferred from LSU to Baptist College at Charleston where he graduated. He was an assistant golf pro at the Country Club of Charleston and head pro at Berkeley Country Club before being named director of golf at Kiawah Island in 1976 shortly after the Kuwaiti government purchased the island. During his 30 years at Kiawah Island, Tommy oversaw the development of three other golf courses and hosted the Ryder Club, which was played at the Ocean Course at Kiawah in 1991. He also hosted the World Cup in 1997 as well as the UBS Warburg Cup in 2001. He was a 3-time winner of the George Miler Country Club Championship. He also won the Charleston Air Force Base Invitational and the Berkeley Invitational. Tommy was a friend and a colleague for a long time through the golf business. His responsibilities and commitment to make Kiawah the best golf destination in the country will be his lasting contribution to the golf scene locally, in the state and nationally. He had a wonderful career at LSU as a college player and continued to play well throughout his life, said Frank Ford III, a longtime friend from Charleston who is one of the best golfers in South Carolina. Cuthbert served on the board of Johnson and Wales Culinary School and Trident Technical College. He also served on the board for the Hollings Cancer Center Golf Tournament for 10 years. He was a member of the Army National Guard, the St. Cecilia Society, the Summerville Sertoma Club, the Summerville High School Athletic Hall of Fame and St. Luke's Lutheran Church. In recognition of his contributions to the development of Kiawah Island as an international golfing destination, the Learning Center was name for him earlier this year. Survivors include his wife Beverly (Bali) Jessen Cuthbert of Summerville; his mother, Dorothy Werner Cuthbert of Summerville; two sons, Walter Cuthbert and his wife, Lisa, and Jess Cuthbert and his wife, Hollis, all of Summerville; one brother, Grange Simons Cuthbert, III and his wife, Priscilla of Mt. Pleasant; one sister, Helen Cuthbert Jenkins and her husband, Terence of Summerville; and a number of nieces and nephews. After 16 years I still love Tommy.

I have learned to appreciate him even more, as the lesson I learned from his commitment to his family, I am now applying to my family.

I can also appreciate his high character, as the years go by, I've never met a finer man, and realize I never will.

The combined parenting of Tommy and Bali has resulted in children and grandchildren they are both proud of.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Cuthbert family. I was blessed to be able to work for Tommy when I became a golf professional and could not have asked for a better mentor and role model. He always greeted me with a smile and hug and had a way of making you feel truely special. He will be greatly missed.

I was in Summerville in November 2005 and met Tommy at the George Miller Country Club. When I met Him I was struck by his goodness and instantly recalled sharing the same table with his brother, Grange in Mrs. Scurry's 1st grade class. On the first day of school I had a very hard time. I remember three things that happened that day. I cried, Mrs. Scurry promised me one of her dog's puppies and how kind and encouraging Grange was to me that day of suffering. Some things we never forget. That day of kindness will be with me always. I could tell at once upon meeting Tommy that he was cut from the same precious bolt of cloth from which Grange was cut. What fine humans. May God bless all of Tommy's family and friends who will miss him so much!

To be absent from this body is to be with the Lord!

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Tommy Cuthbert. Tommy put Kiawah Island on the map and we should all be grateful for what he has accomplished in his lifetime. His door was always open for anybody to stop by for any help or just to say hello. He was a legend in this community and I know his legacy will live on forever.
