Virginia Mathis Obituary

Virginia Mathis HANAHAN - Virginia Brown Mathis, age 84, of Hanahan, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 3, 2025. Born on September 8, 1940, in Georgia, she was the daughter of Hubert and Lanora (Hagler) Brown. Virginia is survived by her son, Brian H. Mathis (Julie) of Summerville, SC; her two grandsons, Patrick J. Mathis and Walker J. Mathis; her sister, Cynthia B. Earl; her brother-in-law, Charles William "Bill" McDaniel Sr.; and a loving extended family of nieces and nephews, including Charlotte McDaniel Spagnolia (John), Charles William McDaniel Jr., Charity E. Pilch (Michael), and Nathan Earl (Tonya). She is also survived by many great and great-great-nieces and nephews, all of whom were dear to her heart. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, M.F. "Pat" Mathis; her father, Hubert H. Brown; her mother, Lanora Elmeda (Hagler) Brown; her sister-in-law, Coraleen Mathis McDaniel; and her nieces, Linda McDaniel and Tonya Leigh McDaniel. Virginia was a dedicated civil servant, retiring after many years of service with the Department of Defense at The Polaris Missile Facility Atlantic (POMFLANT) at the Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek, SC. Her faith and her community were central to her life. She was a founding member of Northwood Assembly Church in North Charleston, SC, and a founding member and vocalist of the gospel group "The Gospelaires" from North Charleston. Virginia had many passions, including cooking, baking, camping in the mountains, and, most importantly, spending time with her family. A lifetime servant of Christ, Virginia was known for her optimistic outlook on life, her kindness, generosity, and boundless love. She had an infectious positivity and could light up any room with her warmth and outgoing nature. She never met a stranger and always made those around her feel welcome and loved. The loss of her beloved husband, Pat, was the most difficult chapter in her life, but the birth of her grandchildren brought her immense joy and was the happiest chapter. Fondly known as "Mimi," she cherished every moment with grandchildren and will continue to love them "always and forever." A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with interment to follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens. Virginia's family would like to thank everyone for their love, support, and prayers during this difficult time. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew her.
