Thomas Mitchum Obituary

Thomas Mitchum N. CHARLESTON - Thomas Oliver Mitchum, 79, joined his wife, Lorraine, in Heaven November 30, 2025, from his home in Park Circle, North Charleston. He was a devoted and loving Husband, Father, Granddaddy, Brother, Neighbor, Friend and Uncle. Tom graduated from Garrett High in 1964 and from Clemson University in 1970 with a B.S. in Industrial Management. He later earned a second degree in Horticulture. He shared his love for nature during frequent hikes with his grandchildren and encouraged children in the neighborhood to pick flowers from his garden while he watched from his front porch swing. He was recognized by the neighbors with Yard of the Month several times for his attention to detail maintaining over one hundred different varieties of flowers, herbs, hedges and trees. Tom was past President of the South Carolina Camelia Society and also a judge at flower shows. Strong in mind and spirit, it was often joked he had nine lives. He was a member of Mensa and loved music, trivia, bridge, and trout fishing. He was a voracious reader and dabbled in poetry, published Heart Songs, and once recited at the Dock Street Theater. All who knew him knew his love for Clemson football. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Castengera Mitchum, brother, Richard, and parents, Mary Frances Cusack and Thomas Beeler Mitchum. Surviving are his daughters, Nina Chitty (Roger) and Shannon Noble (Marc); step-daughter, Lisa DuBose; grandchildren, Hannah Chitty, Luke Noble, Bella Chitty, Martha Noble, Austin Duncan, and Amanda Buzar (Justin); sisters, Mary Susan Brutsch and Victoria Spayde; one great- granddaughter, Sydney Buzar; and his cat, Louie. We will honor him with a celebration of his life on December 13 at his home from 10:00am until noon, followed by inurnment at 1:30pm at Mepkin Abbey, 1098 Mepkin Abbey Rd, Moncks Corner. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to the Charleston Animal Society.
