Thomas Lawton Obituary

LAWTON, Thomas Mr. Thomas Oregon Lawton died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina - Summerville. He was born November 11, 1924, in Allendale SC and was the son of the late Thomas Oregon Lawton and Alexania Salley Easterling Lawton. He attended Wofford College and then enlisted in the US Armed Services. He was a Combat Infantryman in the 36th Division and served in the European and Mediterranean Theaters. His decorations include a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and the Combat Infantrymans Badge. After his service he earned a BA Degree from Duke University and a Law Degree from the Duke University Law School. He had served as president of the Allendale County Bar Association, and was the attorney for both the town and county of Allendale for a number of years. He also served as president of the Huguenot Society and president of the South Carolina Historical Society. He was chairman of the South Carolina Tercentennial Commission. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, Colonial Wars, St. Andrew's Society and First Families of South Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Bess Macaulay Lawton, three children, Thomas O. Lawton, Margaret M. Lawton, Angus M. Lawton. There are six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 10, 2005, at the Presbyterian Home chapel in Summerville. A committal service will be held Friday at 11 a.m., in the Lawtonville Cemetery near Estill, SC. Memorials may be made to: The Presbyterian Home, 201 West 9th North Street, Summerville, SC 29483.
