Thomas Fowler Obituary

FOWLER, Thomas Thomas G. Fowler, 62, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2006, at his home in Stamford, CT after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born November 3, 1943 in Stamford, CT, Tom was the son of Vilma and the late Clarence Fowler. Mr. Fowler was the CEO and Creative Director of Tom Fowler, Inc. in Norwalk, CT; the President of Psymark Communications in Old Saybrook, CT and the owner of the Inua Gallery in Stamford, CT. An avid outdoorsman, he traveled extensively in Alaska, the Adirondikes, and the Canadian Maritime Provinces, as well as France and throughout the Caribbean. His lifelong passion for collecting things manifested itself in the formation of the Inua Gallery of Northern Indigenous Art and Antiquities, the germ of which started 35 years ago with the acquisition of his first piece of inuit art a soap stone carving of a reclining walrus. He had been taught in the design business that often simple designs are the best which is what the Inuit knew instinctively and demonstrated in their lives and in their art that Tom came to love so much. His graphic design firm, Tom Fowler, Inc. was started as a one-man studio in 1975 and has grown into an internationally recognized design firm. His design and illustration work has appeared in nearly every graphic design publication, including Graphis, Print, How, Graphic Design USA, and U&LC. His work is also part of the permanent graphics collections of the Library of Congress and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Hamburg, Germany. Tom's family and friends were always his priority, and he was always willing to help those in need. He lived his life with enthusiasm and adventure. Always willing to share his stories of his Alaskan wilderness adventures circumnavigating Nunivak Island in the Bering Sea or having a bear tear his tent to shreds while camping in the open tundra in northern Alaska above the Arctic Circle, or about his collection. He inspired so many to live life beyond what they had imagined possible. In addition to his mother Vilma Fowler, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Michelle Fowler of Hollywood, South Carolina; his daughter, Amy Fowler of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts; his step daughter and son-in-law Kim and Dom Vagnone and their 2 children, Danbury, CT, his estranged wife, Ruth Fowler of Ridgefield, CT and his partner, Elizabeth P. Ball of Norwalk, CT. Tom is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Robert and Carolyn Fowler of Norwalk, CT; his brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Jackie Fowler of Stuart, Florida; his sister Veronica (Ronnie) Fowler of Stamford, CT; his sister Valerie Hill of Greenlawn, NY; and his nieces and nephews Missy, Sarah, Laura, Lindsay, Keith, Bob, Missie, Kristie, Ken, Richard and Michael. To all of Tom's family I extend,
with love, my heartfelt sympathy.
and offer here a few words that were
once said to me:

"Remember the good times.
Hold them close within your heart
and never, never let go."

My deepest sympathy goes out to all of the family of Tom. He was such a creative person - even when we were in school together at Wright Tech. He will be missed since he was always a part of the Reunion Committee. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I had the pleasure of working with Tom on several design projects in the early and mid 80's. His was always a classy, beautiful and right-on-the-money approach. I also fondly remember being on vacation on Cape Cod sitting on the porch of our cottage and spotting Tom walking over a sand dune unaware that he was appoaching, only to learn that he was staying in a cottage very close by. Unfortunately we lost touch when a job move took me to PA, but he was always held high in my regard, and my wife, Maureen, and I extend our sincerest sympathies to his family.

Tom and I worked together perioically for 25 years, solving creative challenges in several industries. In addition to admiring his design phiosophy and ability, I looked forward to being in his company. We would often share stoies of adventures with people and places; some brought tears of laughter. His passion, talent, and smile will be missed by all he touched.

I speak for each of us at the Saybrook Point Inn when I say that it was an absolute delight to see Mr. Fowler walk through our restaurant doors. We knew that we were not only in for many conversational treats but also lots of laughs and smiles. It was a wonderful blessing to have known and served him. He was an extremely generous and charming man. His presence will be missed by all of us. Rest in peace "Mr. Santa Margherita".

We will truly miss Tom. He was not only our boss, but a great friend. He always had a smile on his face and was very positive. He could always make us laugh with his many character impersonations. We both enjoyed the time we spent with him running meetings and his weekly visits to the office. Lunch at the Point will never be the same. He will remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Your dad was an old high school friend of mine. I saw your dad all the time at "Lakeside Diner" and he always looked like the picture of health to me. So sorry to read about his passing. I'm out of the country and won't be able to express my condolence personally.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
