Thomas DeYoung Obituary

Thomas Madison DeYoung TAYLORS, SC - Tom DeYoung, 75, of Taylors, SC, passed away at his home Wednesday, July 8, 2015. The son of the late Marvin and Gaynelle DeYoung, Tom was born in Clinton, SC, on March 29, 1940. Preceding his death was his infant daughter and son. Besides his beloved wife Elinor of 52 years, Tom is survived by two sons: Billy (Chris) and Bryan (Leigh Ann) both of Greer; grandsons, Josh and Thomas; granddaughter, Catherine; and step-grandson, Will. He is also survived by his sister, Marlene Woods of Clinton, SC; ten wonderful in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom actively participated in many church and civic organizations. While a member of St. Matthew UMC, Tom served as an usher, on the Board of Trustees and was an active participant with the Aldersgate Sunday School class. For 53 years, he served as a Master Mason as a member of Taylors Lodge 345, Palmetto Lodge 19 and Campbell Lodge 44. He also was a life member of the Hejaz Shriners and a member of IPTAY for 42 years. Tom graduated from Clinton High School in 1958 and from then- Clemson College with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1964. Prior to retiring Tom worked with Parker Marine Contractors of Charleston, SC, where he made many friends and enjoyed the lifestyle of the low country for over 17 years. He also was employed with Tindall Concrete Products, Spartanburg Metromont and Greenville Concrete Company. During his career, Tom achieved numerous certifications and designations including ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician and was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and National Society of Professional Engineers. A remarkable husband, father and grandfather, Tom's most enduring quality was his love for his family and friends. He often said his greatest achievement in life was his two sons of whom he was extremely proud. Together he and his "darling" wife enjoyed traveling with the Foothill Travel Motor Home Club, square dancing, shagging and boating. Since retiring he spent many happy mornings with his friends and family at the Soda Shop, Mable's and A&P. Second only to his family, friends and church, was his love for Clemson. He enjoyed spending his fall weekends tailgating at Clemson with his friends and family and cheering the Tigers on to victory. Visitation will be held Monday, July 13, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. Matthew United Methodist Church at 701 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601 with the memorial service to follow at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthew United Methodist Church. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

I worked with Tom at Greenville Concrete way back when. I was a draftsman and Tom was engineer. He was always willing to explain every detail required to perform the difficult job of presenting his design to the production facility in a readable fashion. He will be sorely missed. He was always ready to have a good laugh at my twisted wit. He had a sharp wit himself. One of the engineers who had been really getting into working out and getting into shape, challenged Tom to do 100 push-ups. Tom took the challenge and told the other engineer to go ahead and do his 100. The guy got down in the floor, right in the engineering department, and did his 100 push-ups. Then, slightly winded, he says to Tom, "OK, now you do a 100." Tom says, "Nah, you win, I'm going back to work."
