Stanley Stone Obituary

Reverend Stanley "Stan" Warren Stone MT. PLEASANT - Reverend Stanley "Stan" Warren Stone, 58, husband of Nancy Fagerstrom Stone of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. The relatives and friends of Reverend Stan Stone are invited to attend a Celebration of His Life on Saturday, March 10, 2012 in the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant (Main Sanctuary) at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be private. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. The family will receive friends in the Christian Life Center of First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Stan was born on July 7, 1953 in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of Bobby Ray Stone and the late Syble Davidson Stone. He attended Charleston Southern University and received his Master of Arts in Christian Education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was a minister at First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant and, through a shared position, was Interim Pastor at Sullivan's Island Baptist Church. Stan began his ministry at First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, then went on to serve at Citadel Square Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Gallatin, TN, Ocean View Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, SC where he served in ministry to youth. Eventually he returned to First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant and Sullivan's Island Baptist Church, serving in the areas of youth, family ministry, and preaching. He was a former member of The Committee of Committees with the Baptist Association, and helped with establishing the youth ministry programs at Charleston Southern University and supported its ongoing growth. A former board member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he was, early on, a part of Young Life. Stan was deeply committed to serving others and helped with mission trips to Costa Rica and Guatemala and served with disaster relief programs, especially after Hurricanes Hugo and Katrina. In his spare time, Stan enjoyed being outdoors fishing, surfing, camping, scuba diving, snow skiing, and exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains. Stan will be remembered as one dedicated to his God and family. He possessed a servant's heart, meeting others at their place of greatest need, comforting, caring, and ministering to anyone who turned to him. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Stone of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his father and step-mother, Bobby and Terry Stone of Alto, GA; three children, Peter Stone, Christopher Stone and Callie Stone all of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one sister, Doris Stone Carr and her husband, Lands, of Panama City, FL. The family prefers memorials in Stan's memory be made to Sullivan's Island Baptist Church, 1753 Central Avenue, Sullivans Island, SC 29482. Dear Nancy, Peter, Chris & Callie,
Words are of no use to you now I know, but hopefully knowing that so many people around you are thinking, praying and available to you it will help you to know that love and comfort are there for you wherever you may turn and need or want it. You know how much I thought of Stan, how much he was regarded. Before every football game for so many years we all stood and prayed for the players and cheerleaders. It had a direct link to heaven I believe. I am sure his strong faith is such a comfort to you all now. Please call me for anything, and I mean that. I am all over Mt. Pleasant and can be there for you at anytime. All my love and prayers go out to you.
Love,
Jenlu Williams and Family (224-0851)

I met Stan when I moved to Hanahan in 1964. He was one of the most humble and kind people I've ever known. He taught us all how to follow Christ on this earth. He richly blessed us all. My prayers are with his family.

Nancy, Peter, Christopher and Callie. What a blessing Stan was to all who knew him...even some he did not know. He was a wonderful minister and a man who had a heart bigger than any other. May you find comfort in the fact that he is celebrating with Jesus and he will always be looking out for you from above. My thoughts and prayers for peace and comfort are with you especially now in your grief. Love you all!

Nancy, Peter, Christopher and Callie,
Connie and I want to share with you all how much we loved Stan. Through each of battles with cancer Stan was with us both. His compassion, support and encouragement will never be forgotten. Connie asked Stan for his posting in the "Family Ministry News" while she was going through her treatment. Stan printed them and brought them to Connie. We still read them. I would like to quote what Stan wrote Feb 14, 2006 "My specific prayer request is that I will be a faithful servant of our Lord throughtout this experience. I hope that I can be a testimony to someone. I pray that my family will trust in the Lord for strenght and character during these days. I pray that if it is possible within God's will, that I might be cancer free following this experience. Thank you again for your love and support. It is a gift from God to hear it when we come to crossroads in ours lives. Hallelujah! What a Savior!"
Stan was a faithful servant, friend, encourager and he was a testimony to many.
I pray God will wrap his loving arms about you all and comfort each.

Nancy and family, I would like to offer my condolences in Stan's passing. I always admired him and considered him as a good friend. Wished I would have done a better job of keeping up with him over the years. I often think back on a time when Stan, Joey , and myself all piled in Joey's MGB to go surf fishing a Breach Inlet. It had to be a funny sight, us three in that little tiny car with the fishing poles hanging out the back. Stan will be missed for the impact that he made in so many peoples lives. He certainly has many rewards awaiting him Heaven.

Stan was a fellow high school classmate and neighbor. Our mothers were best friends. My Mom still thinks very high of her. Remember giving both of us a ride home from school during the rain one time. We were both kind of quiet back in high school. Heaven's gate opens wide to those who love. Stan is just ministering on the other side.

Stan will be greatly missed by all. Stan used to be the youth Minister at First Baptist Mount Pleasant, Stan used to drive our Wando Cheerleading team (back in the early 80's) to some of the away games. "Stan the Man" was a good spokesman for Jesus and shared his love for people of all ages. He was a joy to be with and had a great sense of fun and humor that will always be remembered. I am certain that Stan is now enjoying Jesus' loving presence and pray that his family feels God's presence with them also as Stan would want this for them.

I enjoyed ministering with Stan to students at the school. I appreciated his willingness to serve. I regularly recall advice he gave me about ministry. I remember his snoring on youth retreats. I remember most a man who loved God and loved people, right where they are. God gave me an opportunity to pray with Stan the afternoon before he died. Now he sees Him face to face.
