Ruth Sitton Obituary

Ruth Ragsdale Sitton EASLEY, SC - Ruth Ragsdale Sitton, 91, of Easley, S.C. died May 25 at a local hospital, following an extended illness. A brilliant newswoman and a high school teacher of many yearss, Mrs. Sitton was born in Easley, July 22, 1921, a daughter of the late Sallie and W.H. Ragsdale. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, the late John D. Sitton, also an Easley native and businessman. Mrs. Sitton's oldest daughter, Dottie Sitton Ashley of Mount Pleasant, served as the leading arts critic and features writer for the Post and Courier for 18 years, writing profiles on hundreds of outstanding citizens in the Charleston area. Mrs. Sitton, a graduate of Easley High School where she was named class valedictorian, attended Coker College for two years before transferring to the University of Georgia, where she earned a journalism degree in 1941. Selected as an outstanding journalism student, Mrs. Sitton was invited to write articles for the Athens, Ga. daily newspaper, while she was still a student. She served as a correspondent for the Greenville Piedmont in the 50s and as news editor for the Easley Progress newspaper. She also taught at Easley High School for many years, and was highly active in civic affairs, having been secretary of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); president of the First Methodist Church Guild for Women, and an officer in many other organizations. Mrs. Sitton also was a published poet. In the 1940s, when living in Charleston, where her husband was in the U.S. Coast Guard in WWII, her humorous poem: "Mosquitoes" was selected to be published in the then News and Courier by Frank Gilbreath, who was then features editor of the paper. He went on to write the "Ashley Cooper" column in the Post and Courier for many years. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday, May 27, at the First Methodist Church of Easley in downtown Easley. Afterward the family will greet friends at their home at 303 North B St., Easley, SC. She is survived by five children: Dottie Sitton Ashley; Betty Ann Sitton of Easley; James C. Sitton II of Clemson; Dale Sitton Rogers of Roanoke Rapids, N.C and John D. Sitton, Jr., of Easley. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston
