Ruth McSweeney Obituary

Ruth Walsh McSweeney CHARLESTON - Ruth Agnes Walsh McSweeney, 97, went quietly into the arms of her Lord early on the morning of August 20, 2022. She was born on June 3, 1925, in Winnsboro, SC, the youngest of eleven brothers and sisters and was the last of this long familial line. Ruth loved her early years in Winnsboro enjoying dances and athletics at the old community center there as well as her many lifelong friends from childhood. At her beloved Mt. Zion High School, she proudly wore the number 24 as center on the basketball team. During the Second World War she worked at both the Charleston Naval Base and Camp Polk Louisiana in administrative capacities. During that time she met and married her husband of 71 years, William McSweeney, who was stationed at Ft. Moultrie, SC, assigned to the 263 Coast Artillery. Ruth loved her family, her dear friends and her church. Her years as an active participant in the Northbridge Terrace Garden Club and her time with the congregations of Park Circle and Westminster Presbyterian Churches were among the most rewarding and happy of her life. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Bill and leaves a loving family of her daughter and son, Lynn Snook (John) and Bill McSweeney, Jr. (Marie-Helene) as well as granddaughters, Julie Lynn Smith and Margaret Ruth Gregory and great-grandsons, Dylan Gregory and Jonathan Smith (Jaimee) and great-great-grandchildren, Averie Jo Smith and Silas Smith as well as many beloved extended family members. To Lynn and her family ... I was very sorry to see that your Mom has passed away. I have nothing but the best of memories of both your Mom and Dad.
The last time I saw them was my junior year at West Virginia University when I passed through Charleston while driving my Grandmother's car from Florida to Morgantown, WV. Your Mom made me lunch. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I know that the Grace of our Lord and Savior will protect and bless your Mom and you and your family.
Sincerely, Rufus Hutchinson, [email protected]
PS, My Mom passed away at 97 too.

Aunt Ruth was so special to all of her family. I´ll always remember her gentle, loving manner. She was kind and caring and loved with all of her heart. I cherish the time I looked up to her in my youth. I hope I learned a little of what she represented in life and about how to live as a true lady and yet always enjoy life and the people around her. I love picturing her with Uncle Billy....smiles on both of their faces!
