Ruth Cusick Obituary

Ruth Cox Cusick CHARLESTON - Ruth Cox Cusick, 93, of Charleston, SC, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, died on February 20, 2015. Born January 6, 1922 in Tarentum, PA, Ruth was the second daughter of the late Samuel Francis and Catherine Conklin Cox. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Pittsburgh and then attended the University of Pittsburgh, earning a degree in Chemistry in 1943. During WWII, she worked as a chemist for DuPont and Mellon Institute, before starting a large family. She later returned to the workforce at the Department of Energy. Ruth had a wonderful sense of humor and a huge laugh to match. She enjoyed painting, was a voracious reader and was active in sea turtle protection. She was an attentive and loving wife, mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Ruth was preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, Charles S. Cusick, her sister, Marguerite Cox Duffey and cousin Mary M. Voigt. Ruth is survived by her brother-in-law, Patrick J. Cusick of Phoenix, AZ, seven children, Daniel (Sheila) of Pittsburgh, Charles, Jr. (Cindy) of New Castle, PA, William (Teresa) of Floyds Knobs, IN, Catherine (David Hazeltine) of Charleston, SC, Margaret (Anthony Hrudka) of Cleveland, OH, Mary Ellen (Mark Grossnickle) of Macon, GA, and Beth (James Merrigan) of Tucson, AZ and 21 grandchildren, Pat (Connie Martin), Brian (Christin Sciulli), Brendan, Timothy, Steve (Ali), Matt (Franzi), Melissa, Jennifer Cusick; Colleen Morris (Adam), Jackie Lile (Jeff), Lizzy and Sam Hazeltine; Maria and Emily Szramowski; Charlie, Sean, Riley and Anna Grace Grossnickle and Cassandra, Sarah and Clare Merrigan, two great-grandchildren, Rory James and Ava Riley Cusick and many nieces, and nephews. The family will receive visitors at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3871 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Johns Island, SC, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach, P.O.
