Roger Sample Obituary

Roger William Sample CHARLESTON - Roger William Sample (1941- 2021) of Charleston, SC, was called home to his Lord and Savior on Friday, October 29, 2021. The world has lost a great son, brother, partner, father and leader. Roger will be lovingly remembered by his fiance;, DeAnn Carroll; children, Barbara Kinney (Dave), Michelle Bowman (Kip), Julie Groves (Eric), Lisa Sample (Brooks Wharton). He took extreme pride in his grandchildren, Lora Kinney, Nichelle Kinney, Madison Kuzia, Audrey Bowman, Tyler Bowman, Clara Bowman, Cameron Groves and William Groves. His great-grandchildren include Raina, Gianna, David, Skylar and Peyton. He is survived by his sisters, Marjorie Swan and Shirley Young; and countless other family members and friends. Roger was predeceased by his parents, William and Reva; siblings, Gene and George and wife, Maria Sample. Roger was a proud Patriot and cared deeply for his country. From a small town in Patton, Missouri, he left his family's farm in 1960 to serve in the US Navy with dreams of service and to see the world. He served four years in the Navy as a boatsman's mate on the USS Canberra. He sailed the world as a part of the 'People to People Program' launched by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 developed to break the cycle of fear and misunderstandings between people. The President knew that for this program to be effective, it must come through the hearts of people, not government. From this significant experience, Roger built a firm foundation on the value of building solid friendships in both business and personal life which served him well. Roger was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State College, and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from Arkansas State University. He later received his MBA from his beloved Citadel in Charleston, SC. Over the last 20 years, Roger was widely known in the Charleston area for his many years of active participation with service organizations, and for his top-performing real estate sales teams with Carolina One Real Estate. His leadership roles with the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors shaped future generations of local Realtors while setting ethical standards, and mentoring many along the way. In stormy weather, his moral compass never led him astray. Roger was a great problem solver, and willing to share his wisdom and support to resolve any issue for the many people who sought his counsel. He valued spending time with his family. As the father of four daughters, Roger was a very hands-on "Daddy". He taught all the girls how to change a tire, drive a stick shift and cut a lawn even better than some men. He successfully raised his daughters with compassion and kindness while instilling in them a strong sense of independence. He never let them believe they couldn't do something just because they were girls. After being outnumbered by girls most of his life, Roger finally got the son he always wanted when he opened his home to his nephew Brad Frazier. A generous heart and gregarious spirit are traits that Roger carried with him throughout his personal and business life. From traveling abroad to enjoying the benefits of Lowcountry living including boating, biking and dining out. Roger loved hosting gatherings for friends and family to celebrate and be together. Roger was a parishioner of St. Michael's Church in Historic Charleston, and it is of great comfort to his family that he is at peace in the loving arms of his Lord and Savior. The family would like to thank Dr. Ravi Veeraswamy and the many medical teams at Medical University of South Carolina for their diligent and excellent care of him. Also, the loving outreach from friends for their unwavering support during this most difficult and heartrending time for the Sample family. May God's blessings be with all of you.
The funeral will be held at Roger's church home, St. Michael's Church, 71 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401 at 10:00 am Saturday November 6th. Immediately following the service, Roger will be laid to rest at Old St. Andrew's Parish Church, 2604 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC 29414. A Celebration of Life will be held after the burial at The Sample Family home, 1845 Capri Drive, Charleston, SC 29407 from 2pm-5pm.
