Robert Turner Obituary



TURNER, Robert Mr. Robert W. 'Bob' Turner, age 85, widower of the late Mrs. Natalie Richardson Turner, former local realtor and past member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives from 1959 to 1971, passed away in the afternoon hours on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at a local hospital. Friends and family are invited to attend his funeral service on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Cherokee Place United Methodist Church, 2015 Cosgrove Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405. Burial will immediately follow at Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston. A visitation will be held at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME this evening, Friday, May 30, 2008 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. Mr. Robert W. 'Bob' Turner was born on October 3, 1922, in Florence County, SC, a son of the late Robert W. Turner and the late Elizabeth Cameron Turner. He graduated from Johnsonville High School in 1942 and then attended Birmingham Southern College in 1943-44. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army serving in WWII. He was the President of the Charleston Real Estate Board in 1957, President of the North Charleston Jr. Chamber of Commerce in 1958, President of the North Charleston Business and Professional Men's Association in 1953, Secretary of the North Charleston Exchange Club in 1954, Vice President of the Charleston Society of Residential Appraisers in 1958, a Mason of the Dorchester Lodge #369, and a member of the American Legion. He was a member South Carolina of the House of Representatives from 1959 to 1971. He was a self made business man. He was the owner of the Robert W. Turner Realty Agency. He was a self-employed realtor and built many homes throughout the North Charleston area over the years. He will be fondly remembered to many as a 'Mayor without a city' helping to get North Charleston started in the 1970's. Mr. Turner loved his family dearly and they will always remember him for being kind hearted, visionary, strong willed, very intelligent, caring and helpful to those down on their luck. He was a wonderful father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his son, Robert G. Turner, and his wife Linda, of Charleston; four daughters, Nancy Macdonald of North Charleston, Sherryl Gibbs, and her husband DeForest, of North Charleston, Karen Johnson, and her husband Legare, of Awendaw, and Janet 'Jan' G. Turner of North Charleston; nine grandchildren, Leah Macdonald, Scott Macdonald, Tradd Gibbs, Berkeley Thorsten, and her husband Paul, Stephanie Gibbs, and Adam Johnson, Amy Johnson, Lauren Turner and Robert 'Ben' Turner. Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his wife, the late Natalie Richardson Turner. Flowers will be accepted at the funeral home or memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Turner's honor to the Hollings Cancer Center, 171 Ashley Avenue, Charleston, SC 29425.
