Dear Miz June, Vic, Suzanne, and the entire Schirmer Family,

I work quite closely with Vic Fetter, a relationship already beyond simply professional which I enjoy enormously; I know, all too well, the feel of such very special loss!

Understanding the hole left behind, regardless the inevitability or forewarning, pray this helps some wee bit...to allow...enable…the grief! So truly sorry to hear about your cousin & friend. At least now he's at peace…definitely keepin' y'all in my prayers!

When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss…inconsolable…she was my mentor! I like to think that I got my character from my father, but my mind and its capacity from m'dear sainted mother!!! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity dearly close...a cherished, hard-won prize...but, in the interim, that answer lies below.

SELFISH TEARS
(I Eulogize My Beloved Mother - March, 1989)

Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!

We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!

So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!

I will always be indebted to the Hagg for giving me the opportunity to captain the YoYo and the Sammy J. I would never change a thing about that time in my life. He gave me confidence in myself that has carried on to this day. My thoughts and prayers to the Schirmer family.

With great sorrow Mr. Sonny, the Sea Hagg, has left a hole in our mortal ocean and is trawling the heavens for more "shrump". His sinews, again as tough and resilient as a Sullivan's Island thorny vine, tug in the try net with the tenacious vigor that filled his life. June, Gloria, Leize, and Sam, we will greatly miss your husband and Dad, a terrific neighbor, a noble saltwater prodigy of the SC lowcountry.

I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Schirmer. He was such a sweetheart. I used to love when he would come to the office to see Dr. Dawson. I sorry I haven't been there but I always kept my patients' close to my heart. He will be missed. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Love always, Kathy Reece

Fond memories of visiting with The Hagg in Florida when he was shrimping with my husband (at that time). My sympathy to you all.

I am so sorry to hear about Sonny. We go way back together and I will always remember the incident with me flying out of the Jeep. The last time I visited him, he still talked about it!!

To June, Sam, Gina, Leize and the whole clan Sonny was simply one of the best. His smile and handshake will be missed.

The world will be so different without Sonny in it.He made a big difference in many people's lives.As a child looking back going shrimping with him and the money he lost because of it. I Thank him for that and for being such fun.i will miss him.My Prayers are with Aunt June and the Family.

No matter who you were Sonny and Lovely June would welcome you into their home and treat you like Family.I know they did this with me. A true Southerner, great captain, and a wonderful friend.Rest in Peace Sonny. it was an Honor to know you.

I always loved SONNY from the time I was a child. As a young man I found that many of my Mt Pleasant friends knew him and there were many Sonny "HAGG" stories.
