Dear Family of Peatsy Liddy Hollings,
My family and I were so fortunate to know Peatsy so many years ago. She taught both my sisters at St. Andrews but I knew her as a patron of my family's business, Zinn's Deli, where she,her mother and sister would come in very often. I always enjoyed talking to them all. I know Peatsy will be missed by so many people as she inspired everyone she met. She was always kind and uplifting. What a joy to be around and to know. I remember the day she told me she was going to marry Sen. Hollings. She was excited and I was very happy for her. I have spoken of her often through the years and have missed seeing her.
My sincere condolences to her entire family on this very sad occasion.

How we all loved Miss Liddy with the beautiful smile and indomitable spirit. She expressed such passion for history and government, indeed for life, that we couldn't help but be excited about learning. What a treasure she was to all who knew her. My deepest condolences and prayers go to the family. Rita "Peatsy" Liddy will live on in the many hearts whose lives she touched. God bless you all. (St. Andrews high School, class of 1964)

I want to express my condolences to her family and am feel grateful to have known her.
She has truly left a wonderful legacy for the American people.

Senator Hollings & Family. I extend my heartfelt condolence. I just shaked your hand as you were leaving out of Walmart & asked how your wife was, not knowing the end was near. God makes no mistakes. He called his child home to take her rest by him. God will surely ease your pain. I pray for Grace & Mercy for you & the family.

Peatsy was the best public citizen of South Carolina that was neither elected nor appointed. Those of us who worked for the Senator were lucky to view firsthand the way that she and the Senator represented our State in Washington, around the country and throughout the world. I hope a historian will capture the intelligence, dignity and charm of this remarkable and devoted couple.

Dear Senator Hollings and family,
Piper and I were so very sorry to hear of Peatsy's passing. We know how much you will miss her. But we also know that you will find peace with time. You and Peatsy were an unbelievable team who did so very, very much for the people of South Carolina and the entire United States. I was proud to travel with you during the 1983-84 and to put a focus on the issues of importance to the Nation then and sadly the Nation today. You and Peatsy made a huge difference through your good works. We will miss Peatsy but we have confidence she is now truly at peace. Be well. We love you.

Peasty was my big sister, taking me and many other students she met as a teacher on her lifetime adventure into public service. In the mid 1960's, she taught me how to make a good gin and tonic and pimento cheese from scratch. She took several us to New York City in August, 1966, staying a week in the Larchmont home of one of her aunts who was married to Matt McLoughlin, a distinguished gentleman and general counsel to Avco Lycoming. She took us to see Funny Girl and Fiddler on the Roof and how to eat with proper manners in the city's great restaurants. She bought and put Visine in my eyes when they dried out walking the streets of New York. She included me among several regulars who would gather on Sunday afternoons at her mother's home in The Crescent to enjoy cocktails, evaluate my growing bartending skills and cuss Republicans. Her dear mother taught us all to detest Vice President Agnew who she knew to the depth of her soul was an absolute crook, as he and Richard Nixon certainly turned out to be.
Most importantly, Peatsy wrote to me from Washington every week I was in Vietnam from 1968-1969. Those were very difficult times for me, as I served as an infantry squad leader in the 4th Infantry Division and saw lots of action but Peatsy's letters, stuffed with news clippings about SC politics and news of the day, kept me going and in touch with home and a hopeful future. She taught a whole generation of us to love American history, read its best books (her favorite back then was The Guns of War by Barbara Tuchman about the coming of WWI)and to find ways to serve our country and state. She was passionate for the many causes she embraced in Washington and in South Carolina and adored her husband who continues to be a resource for the nation. And what a loyal and loving husband he was to this blessed woman, especially in the years she needed him the most. We'll not see the likes of Peatsy Liddy Hollings again in our lifetimes but each of us who were her mentorees can carry on her passion and love of life.
