Ralph graduated BEHS in 1978, the same year I finished sixth grade. As he went through the CofC, and even after he graduated, he would invite me out to the beach with him. We would head out to Sullivan´s Island, hit the sand at Station 25, and bake in the sun for about an hour before walking down to the rocks by the lighthouse. More often than not, we would run into someone Ralph knew from school or downtown or the island or the restaurant business - they all treated Ralph like a long-trusted friend, and to me, Ralph was "the big man on the beach". He´d don his Ray Bans, and I´d be wearing knock-offs trying to be anywhere near as cool. We´d stop by Taco Trio on the way back home, Ralph would plug the juke box with a few quarters, and those first few guitar strums of Bob Seger´s "Night Moves" would begin to ease out of the speakers - "it was summer time.... sweet summer time, summer time".
He didn´t have to take his little brother along - but he did. We both appreciated the time at the beach, but being so far behind in age, I was really happy to get the time to hang out with one of my older brothers. I was still in high school when Ralph moved away, but kept up those summer beach traditions - and Bob Seger is in my cd rack, my iTunes account, and my Spotify list.
"...Strange how the night moves.... With autumn closin´ in..."
Miss those days - love ya´ brother,
