Paul Putman Obituary

PUTMAN, Paul Paul "Put" Putman passed away Thursday, February 26, 2009 at his home in the Bishop Gadsden community of Charleston, South Carolina. Put was born and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He attended Northwestern University, was a member and officer of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, and graduated in 1950 from The Kellogg School of Management. Put started his professional career at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio but moved to Toledo, Ohio to join the AP Parts Corporation. Starting out on the docks loading trucks and working "changeovers", Put became president of AP in 1958. Leading the company through an active period of acquisition, Put became CEO of Questor Corporation, a NYSE traded Fortune 500 company, whose holdings included Spalding Sporting Goods, Evenflo Infant Products, and Dunhill, International. While head of Questor, Put moved with his family to Madrid, Spain where he took on directorships of Wells Fargo Express and Atamaria, S. A. as well as the development of Murcia's La Manga Campo de Golf. In the early 1990's, Put and his wife Smiley moved to South Carolina where they enjoyed many happy years on the beaches and golf courses of Kiawah Island, often joined by their daughters and grandchildren. Throughout his life, Put was active in a number of charitable and social organizations including Junior Achievement and The Trident United Way where he was a member of the Toqueville Society and the Kiawah Island Division chair. Known to and loved by all in the Bishop Gadsden community, Put was especially proud of the creation of The Putman Clinic and "Put's Pub". Put is survived by Smiley, his wife of 58 years, his three girls, Andrea Putman Reams of Toledo, Ohio, Sheri Conway of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and Wendy Kalil of Rye, New Hampshire, and ten grandchildren. A memorial service was held at 2:00 Saturday, February 28, 2009, in the Bishop Gadsden chapel; a reception followed. The family requests donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to either Odyssey Hospice of Charleston or the Bishop Gadsden Resident's Assistance Fund. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.
