I love Orin like I gave birth to him. He was my student first then he became my son. The first year I taught at West Ashly High School, he stayed in my class after school one day and told me, things will get better. The students are just freshman, that is the way they act. He stayed with me everyday that year and he taught what teaching was all about. I love him and I will remember him everyday of my life. I love you Orin.

Mary,
I have just read through all these loving thoughts about Orin, and although I did not know him, I know how kind you are and how hard you have worked to raise your children well. I have seen your love for the children at Second Presbyterian and when you have stayed with Lily and SaSa. I cannot imagine your loss, but I do believe that Orin is safe in God's embrace ... as are you and your family.
Love,

I remember when i first ment Orin in 8th grade three years ago. I remember him being able to make me laugh or smile when i needed it. Its hard to be at school and not see his face or hear his voice anymore its tough. I can't believe that he's really gone out of ourlives. Wow!It's really hard for me to put anything in words because i am still in shock about orin. He was like a brother to me, and he looked as me as another big brother. He would always come to me for advice and encouragement and i would do that same. Orin always took time out of his busy schedule for anyone who needed help with anything. No matter what time u would call him he would answer his phone and listen and give good advice. I am really gonna miss him, i just can't believe my best friend his gone. But I am not gonna ask why becaue God has plan for everyone's life and when he his ready for you to come home there's no running from it. Orin is in a better place looking down on everyone he loved and everyone who loved him. The place where Orin is is much better than being in this world, and that his in the arms of the Lord. Mrs. Mary, Rhonda, Pumpkin, and Randy You all have my number, feel free to call me anytime. Orin will be missed but never forgotten. I want to start off by saying that Orin was a good person. When me and him use to talk he always kept me laughing. It's like when I talked to him, it would always be something positive. I'm sorry that happend and when I found out I couldn't stop crying half of the time. Inside of me knew that, crying isn't going to bring him back. He wouldn't want me breaking down so, everybody and myself who knows him and misses him needs to be strong for him and know that he is in a better place. Love You Orin!

Dear Mrs. Brown,
It was my honor to have been Orin’s African American Studies teacher. I am with the class that Orin was in as I write this, and all of the students feel the same tremendous loss that I do. Orin was such a bright spirit. I can’t imagine anyone not loving him, just as we all did.
There is a poem about those who have gone before us that I read to my students during our recent field trip downtown and to Sullivan’s Island that I am going to mail to you later today. A friend of mine sent it to me when my father died, and reading it gave me a great deal of comfort. I hope it will do the same for you and your family when you receive it.
Orin wrote an essay about that field trip that I will also mail to you. In it, he mentioned that he had shared his memories of that special day with you. As you may recall from his describing the trip to you, it was an especially beautiful day that Friday. All of us got into a circle on the beach and joined hands, and then, one by one, each of us came to the middle of the circle and dedicated a carnation to all those West Africans who came across the Middle Passage three centuries ago. Orin is with all of them now.
In addition to mailing the poem and the essay along with some personal notes from each member of the class, I am going to include a poster that Orin made for a project back in November. The assignment was for each student to choose a Swahili name that he thought epitomized who he really felt he was as an individual, and to illustrate these traits. Orin chose Jabari, which means brave and strong-hearted, and I saved his poster because of how very special and creative it is.
Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
With deepest sympathy,
Susan Haynsworth Meissner and Orin’s classmates in 2A African American Studies Class

To the Brown Family,
Orin was a very special and hard working young man who was so loving & who was never afraid to dream. Orin was the ideal student who wanted nothing more than to do well in school and graduate. I will miss his laughter and his smile, both of which I looked forward to each day in class. Although your soul is weary with sorrow, I admonish you to look to the Lord and allow Him to be your refuge & strength. My prayers will continually be with you.

The first time I was introduced to Orin - Hey said hello with a soft timid smile. Over the last two years, I've watched this beautiful young man with the timid smile grow into a outgoing, responsible man with dreams and ambitions. It is so heartbreaking that his life was cut so short at such a young age. I spent Saturday at work with Orin - Everyone was it such great spirits, we cut up and laughed, talked about Randy's upcoming wedding and talked about how well Orin was doing at school. It was a good day and I am thankful that I will always have that.
To Ms. Mary, Randy and the entire family, you are in my constant thoughts and prayers. I feel as though I have lost a close family member, I can not even imagine the pain you are feeling. Orin will always be a reminder that there are good and caring people in the world and I will miss him.

To the mother of Orin Brown:
For you I am praying. I can not imagine what you're going through having lost a child. I can only hope you find comfort in knowing that God is there for you to lean and depend on. If you turn your heavy burden over to Him, He will give you the needed strength to see you through. Always remember, nothing can ever happen to you that God can't see you through. Also, He will never allow more on you than you can bear and He only came to take His own.

TO THE BROWN FAMILY
WHEN I RECEIVED THE CALL FROM RANDY SUNDAY MORNING, I REALLY THOUGHT HE WAS MESSING WITH ME BY THE SOUND OF HIS CRY BUT THEN I HEARD THE BACKGROUND AND REALIZED THERE WAS NO JOKE BEING PULLED ON ME THIS TIME. MS. MARY GOT ON THE PHONE AND ALL I COULD DO IS PUT MY FACE IN A TOWEL AND CRY SO SHE WOULDN'T HEAR MY UNCONTROLLABLE TEARS. THE RELATIONSHIP I HAD WITH ORIN WAS VERY SPECIAL, HE WOULD COME TO ME FOR ADVICE AND CONFIDE IN ME, HE WOULD BE JOKEY WITH ME , OR HE JUST COME UP TO ME AND HUG ME BECAUSE WE HAD SOME STRANGE CONNECTION. HE WAS LIKE MY OTHER SON I CARE FOR HIM SO MUCH JUST AS I DO MY OWN
HE WAS LIKE THE BROTHER I NEVER HAD. ORIN WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A SPECIAL PERSON TO ME AND EVERYONE WHO MET HIM. I COULD GO ON AND ON WITH STORIES BUT I WILL KEEP THEM CLOSE TO MY HEART. NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW HOW CLOSE WE BECAME IN SUCH A SHORT TIME BUT THAT IS THE KIND OF PERSON YOU WERE.
ALL I CAN SAY TO HIM NOW THAT HE IS GONE:
ORIN, THIS IS NOT GOOD BYE. I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN ONE DAY YOU CAN MEET ME AT THE PEARL GATES WITH YOUR ARMS WIDE OPEN BACAUSE I WILL BE READY FOR YOUR HUG THAT I WILL HAVE MISSED SO......AND THAT PERFECT RADIANT SMILE YOU HAVE. I WILL MISS YOU MORE THAN YOU KNOW BUT I HOPE YOU CAN BE MY OWN PERSONAL GUARDIAN ANGEL WATCHING DOWN ON ME AND I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN IN MY DREAMS. I LOVE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY VERY MUCH. I WILL KEEP OUR TALKS, OUR TEXT MESSAGES, AND EVERYTHING ELSE WE SHARED CLOSE TO ME. I HAD FUN WORKING WITH YOU AT THE FLOWER SHOP AND WILL ALWAYS CHERISH YOU AND EVERYTHING YOU GAVE TO ME EMOTIONALLY AND SPIRITUALLY.
TO MS. MARY AND THE FAMILY
IF THERE IS ANYTHING I COULD DO TO MAKE THIS EASIER I WOULD. IT IS EASY TO SAY BUT HE IS IN A GOOD PLACE NOW.

ORIN'S DEATH CAME AS A SUDDEN BUT COMPLETE SHOCK TO ME, AS I EXPECTED TO ALL OF YOU. I AM DEEPLY SADDEN BY YOUR LOSE. I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW YOU FEEL MARY LOSING ORIN, BUT I CAN RELATE TO LOSING SOMEONE YOU LOVE SUDDENLY, WITHOUT NOTICE OR THOUGHT. THIS HAPPENED TO ME 5 YEARS AGO, WHEN WE LOST OUR OLDEST NEPHEW THAD. THE DEVASTATION AND HURT WAS UNBEARABLE. SO I SAY TO YOU MARY,RHONDA,PUMPKIN,RANDY,CHARLES AND THE REST OF THE BROWN FAMILY, LOOK TO THE HILLS WHERE YOUR STRENGTH WILL COME FROM THE LORD. LEAN AND DEPEND ON JESUS, FOR HE WILL GET YOU THRU YOUR WORST DAYS, NIGHTS, MINUTES, AND HOURS. I PRAY THAT YOU ALL, WILL FIND COMFORT AND PEACE IN TIME. I WILL KEEP YOU ALL IN PRAYER BECAUSE GOD DO HEAR AND ANSWERS PRAYER. RHONDA, YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU, AND IF YOU NEED ME FOR ANYTHING JUST SAY THE WORD. GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU, AND KNOW THAT ORIN IS IN THE ARMS OF OUR HEAVENLY FATHER LOOKING DOWN ON ALL OF YOU.
WITH DEEP SORROW AND REGRET,
THE MOZZEE FAMILY:
THERESA, ANTHONY, TOOKA, NIGIL, MIRACLE, A.J., JALEN AND JASHIAH
