Opal Cannon Obituary

CANNON, Opal SPARTANBURG, SC - Opal Doreen Lancaster Cannon, 87, of 650 Norwood Street, died Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born April 7, 1918, in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Alavenia Fowler Lancaster. She was the wife of the late Rev. Joel Earle Cannon, a United Methodist minister who served the SC United Methodist Conference for 47 years. A 1939 graduate of Converse College, she was a retired high school English and French teacher in various areas of the state and also a piano teacher. She was extremely active in the United Methodist Church in areas of the state that her husband served. She was a member of the Converse College Alumni Association and a former president of the State Minister's Wives Association of the SC United Methodist Conference. Survivors include two daughters, Opal Catherine Cannon of Columbia, and Mildred Josephine Joey Cannon of Spartanburg; and three sisters, Doris Lancaster Magee of Roanoke, VA, Mildred F. Lancaster and Nancy Lancaster Rooney, both of Greenwood. She was predeceased by a brother, James Overton Lancaster; and a sister, Helen Lancaster Hudgins. Visitation will be 7:30-9:00 p.m. Thursday, December 15, 2005, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2005, at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SC United Methodist Foundation, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 309-B, Columbia, SC 29204; to St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1320 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307; or to Epworth Children's Home, P.
