Norma Barton Obituary

Norma Thatcher Barton CHARLESTON - Norma Thatcher Barton, widow of Charles N. Barton (d. 1998), died peacefully at home on Sunday, March 9, 2014. Born November 7, 1922 in North, South Carolina to the late Eugene Vedder Thatcher and Norma Davis Thatcher, she moved with her family to Charleston, where she attended the Craft School and Ashley Hall. She attended the Fairmont School in Washington, DC, and was a graduate of Converse College. During WWII she worked for the Charleston Postmaster, and on a blind date arranged by friends, she met Navy Lieutenant Charles Barton. They married at St. Philips Episcopal Church in Charleston, then moved to Charles' hometown of Douglaston, NY, where they raised their family and were active in the Douglaston Community Church and the Douglaston Club. Norma served for many years as volunteer coordinator of NYC Visiting Nurse Association. Norma and Charles often visited Charleston and had a vacation home on Seabrook Island where they were founding members of the Seabrook Island Club. In 1987 they moved to Charleston to be near their children. Members of the French Huguenot Church, they resided on Legare Street and later in Wappoo Heights where they gardened and enjoyed their grandchildren. Norma grew orchids and bonsai and shared her irrepressible zest for life with family and friends. Norma is survived by her children, C. Knight Barton (Nancy), Salley B. Davidson (Vaughan), Walter E. Barton (Amanda); grandsons, Trey Davidson and Barton Davidson, all of Charleston; also, by grandsons, C. Owen Barton of Maui, HI, and W. Thatcher Barton of Ithaca, NY. Norma was predeceased by her brothers, Eugene Thatcher and Gerald Thatcher, and sister Constance Thatcher Peale. The family wishes to thank Lutheran Hospice for their excellent caring assistance. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Lutheran Hospice of Charleston, www.lutheranhospice.org, 1885 Rifle Range Rd., Suite 46, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. A family and friends graveside service at Magnolia Cemetery will take place at a later date. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston
