Dr. Newton Gaston Quantz, Jr. CHARLESTON - Dr. Newton Gaston Quantz. Jr., 86, Charleston. S.C., devoted husband of Lillian Braun Quantz, entered into eternal rest November 7, 2024. Newt was born June 5, 1938 in Sumter, South Carolina, the son of Dr. Newton Gaston Quantz, Sr. and Frances Bland Quantz of Rock Hill, S.C. Dr. Quantz was a graduate of Davidson College (1960) and a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He graduated from Tulane University Medical School, New Orleans, Louisiana (1964). He completed his internship and residency at the Tulane Service of Charity Hospital, New Orleans, in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. He then served as a Major in the U.S. Army at the 2nd General Hospital, Landstuhl, West Germany. Dr. Quantz was board certified and practiced medicine in private practice in Augusta, Georgia from 1971 to 2001. Throughout his career Dr. Quantz was associated with many local, state. and national medical organizations and societies and also many historical and volunteer organizations. Newt had a lifelong passion for the great outdoors with a particular love of quail and wild turkey hunting. In his youth, Newt participated in many sports, both team and individual. He later included his love of sports and travel, both domestic and foreign, into an integral part of his family life with frequent inclusion of friends. Newt also was an avid reader and student of history, especially pertaining to family history. After retiring from the practice of medicine, Dr. and Mrs. Quantz moved to Charleston, S.C. Dr. Quantz was a member of the Carolina Yacht Club, The Charleston Country Club, The Daniel Island Club, The Huguenot Society of South Carolina, Saint Philip's Church (Anglican), the French Huguenot Church, The Society of Colonial Wars, The Sons of Confederate Veterans, The Sullivan's Island Beach Group, and The Supper Club. Newt fought a lengthy and arduous battle with an extremely rare auto-immune disease, IgG4-RD. Dr. Quantz was predeceased by his parents and younger brother, James Bland Quantz (Columbia, S.C.). Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Lillian Braun Quantz, Charleston, S.C., two sons, Newton Gaston Quantz, III (Lanier), Atlanta, Georgia, and William Brogan Quantz (Beth), Charleston, S.C., grandchildren, Newton Gaston Quantz. IV, Shelton Sykes Quantz, and William Porter Quantz, brother, Francis Patterson Quantz (Jeanie), Spartanburg. S.C., and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saint Philip's Church, 142 Church Street, Charleston, S.C. 29401 or The Huguenot Society of South Carolina, 138 Logan Street, Charleston. S.C. 29401.
