Nancy Hudock Obituary

Nancy Wills Hudock SUMMERVILLE - Nancy Wills Hudock set off on her final adventure on March 28, 2015, at the age of 75. Her children, who were some of her biggest fans, were there to support her as she prepared for her departure. Nancy's life serves as an example of a life well lived for her children and grandchildren, and stories of her life and adventures will be told for generations to come. Nancy was among the first group of women to graduate from the nursing school at the University of North Carolina. Her nursing career included 20 years working for the Native Health Service above the Arctic Circle in both Kotzabue and Barrow, Alaska. When she wasn't providing healthcare for the Native Alaskans, she was living off the grid in a log cabin with her dog and companion, Charlie. Nancy might still be riding her snowmobile there now if a bout with cancer hadn't forced her to return to the lower 48. After beating her cancer, Nancy made the trek to one of the only unstripped mountaintops in Kermit, West Virginia, where she worked with a wonderful group of nuns as a caretaker and camp counselor. Nancy took great pride in the work she did with the Sisters, providing summer camp opportunities for the impoverished children of the area. She also supplied her friends with fresh eggs from the chickens she raised while there. Her chickens meant a great deal to her, and she made sure she imparted that knowledge to several of her grandchildren. Health issues brought Nancy off the mountain, but more closely into the lives of her children and grandchildren. Memaw, as her grands called her, taught them how to crochet, how to properly use a knife, how to drive a four-wheeler, and how to make gourd birdhouses. There was even more she had hoped to teach and share with all of her family. She is survived by her children, Amy Hudock (Roger West), of Hanahan, SC; Stacy Hudock Proscia, of Sanford, FL; James Hudock, Jr, of Charlotte, NC; and Jenny Hudock Toney (Nick), of Panama City Beach, FL. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her sister, Susan Wills, of Holly Hill, NJ. Many more stories need telling and memories recalled, and the opportunity to do so will be at the Celebration of the Life of Nancy Wills Hudock, which will take place on April 18, 2015, from 1:00-4:00 pm at Madra Rua, in Summerville, SC. “Time will say nothing but I told you so” - missing those we love seems to change less than the world around us. Sending love and prayers to all of you in another year of remembrance.

Memory is a poor substitute for the vibrant life we knew, but while the pain of loss remains fresh, the reminders we receive can hold us and comfort us a while. Sending my love and prayers, especially to Amy.
