Milton Sutherland Obituary

SUTHERLAND, Milton GREENVILLE, SC - Sergeant Major Milton Jefferson Sutherland, USMC, retired, 89, of Greenville, died Friday, December 31, 2004 at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home, Anderson, SC. Born in Helena, AR, he was a son of the late Harry I. Sutherland and Clara Harmon Sutherland. He was a graduate of Marion High School, where he was Captain and quarterback on the "Swamp Fox" Football team. He was also a pitcher and catcher on the baseball team. In high school he was affectionately known as "Red Sutherland". He was a member of the Lillian Truesdale Sunday School class in Marion. He retired from the US Marine Corps after thirty years of service and at the time of his retirement he was with the Fourth Marine Division. Milton was in the second wave on the assault of Iwo Jima. He had received numerous medals including the Bronze Star. Following his retirement, he was associated with the Holiday Inns in Greenville. He was a member of Northside United Methodist Church. Surviving are his sister, Delia Sutherland Gaffney and her husband, Richard M. of Greenville; a niece, Delia G. Malone and her husband, John of Fort Lauderdale, FL; two nephews, Morgan Gaffney of Roswell, GA and Baker Scott of Huntington Beach, CA; a great-niece, Jessica Scott of Huntington Beach, CA; and two great-nephews, Richard Elliott Tapp of Greenville and Keith Harrison of Seneca. Also surviving are Jacqueline Kudrov and Aaron Avila. He was predeceased by a sister, Eloise Sutherland Kish an a niece, Mary H. Scott Kudrov. Services were held on Monday, January 3, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Remembrance Chapel at Woodlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Barry W. Cannon officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northside Untied Methodist Church, 435 Summit Drive, Greenville, SC 29609 or to a charity of one's choice.
