Mildred Baldwin Obituary

BALDWIN, Mildred Mildred Hunley Rhett ( Bee ) Baldwin passed away on Saturday, March 4th, 2006, in Charleston, S.C. The daughter of Mildred and Robert Goodwyn Rhett, she was born on November 26, 1918, in New Orleans, La. She grew up on South Bay Street in Charleston, S.C., graduated from Ashley Hall School in 1936, and attended Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans. She was married to George H. Baldwin, Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla. for 38 years before his death in 1979, and lived in Jacksonville for 50 years before returning to Charleston in 2000. She was a member of the St. Marks Episcopal Church of Jacksonville, Fla.; the Florida Yacht Club; the Junior Leagues of Jacksonville, Fla. and Charleston, S.C.; the S.C. Historical Society; and the Colonial Dames. Bee was fascinated with the natural world and its various inhabitants; she loved listening to and watching birds; and being in the out-of-doors provided her great enjoyment. She was a supporter of numerous conservation organizations and animal protection groups. Bee's other passion was genealogy, and she spent many hours in the productive research and documentation of her ancestors and their kin. Her uncommonly kind heart will be missed by those who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister Marjorie Maury Rhett March; she is survived by her three sons, George Hull Baldwin III and wife Christy of Jacksonville, Fla., John Rhett Baldwin and wife Lees of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Bryan Baldwin and wife Anne Moore of Birmingham, Ala.; her brother Robert Goodwyn Rhett, Jr. and wife Joan; her grandchildren John Rhett Baldwin, Jr. and wife Ruth, George Hull Baldwin IV, Christopher Bryan Baldwin, and Kathryn Rhett Baldwin; her great-grandchildren John Rhett Baldwin III and Merritt Ruth Baldwin; and a number of beloved nieces and nephews. A graveside service will precede interment at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Ga. at 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 12, 2006. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a local SPCA, The Wilderness Society, or the National Audubon Society. Arrangements were made through Palmetto Cremation Society, Charleston.
