Maurice H. Cohen CHARLESTON - Maurice Herbert Cohen, 94, a long-term resident of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Saturday, October 21, 2023 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, Vermont. Maurice was born August 20, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York, son of Charles and Sylvia Cohen. He earned a PhD in Philosophy and Religion from Columbia University and was a professor of Philosophy and Ancient Civilizations at the Julliard School, the University of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada and The City College of New York. He also taught as adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. He served in the U.S. Army as an Infantry Officer in the Korean War. Maurice was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Caroline Weston Cohen, of Charleston, South Carolina. One of Maurice's favorite memories and stories was of meeting Caroline on the Staten Island Ferry when she was a graduate student at Columbia University, working for Margaret Mead. He is survived by daughters, Sarah Cohen Wood (Caroline) of Vermont, Lottie Koster of Charleston, SC, Rachel C. Pulling (Kyle) of Folly Beach, SC, and a son, William Weston Cohen (Susan) of Pittsburgh, PA as well as nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Parents Circle - Families Forum (PCFF), a joint Israeli-Palestinian NGO working to encourage dialogue, reconciliation, and peace for Israeli and Palestinian families who have lost loved ones in conflict.

We knew Maurice for many years. He was fine man and friend. He served as president of the Charleston German Shepherd club for several years and will be missed by all who knew him.
