I remember when Alice used to sit by the road weaving her baskets and she once try to show me how to weave one but I could never get it right. She was always a sweet lady to me and it was a pleasure to have known Alice as a child growing up. It has been a while since I left South Carolina and I will miss Alice. Our prayers and thoughts oes out to the family. We wish that we could be there with you all right now.

Without Mary's help, CharlestonSweetgrass.com would have never been created. My love and respect for her precision in sweetgrass sewing, her kindness, and historic presence as a Charlestonian. She once told me about how she worked for JC Long, how her last name "Venning-Vanderhorst" came about, and I was honored by the ability to photograph her and her work. Her artistic legacy will remain forever in the hands of the proud owners of her baskets. I will miss you Mary and my thoughts and prayers go out to your family.
