Mary Mitchum Obituary

Mary Lee Mitchum CHARLESTON - Mary Lee Mitchum, 92, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Andrew Zack Mitchum, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, May 23, 2023, with her loving son, Lamar Mitchum, and his family by her side. Her funeral service will be held Sunday, May 28, 2023, at Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savanna Hwy. at 2:00 PM. Interment at Live Oak Memorial Gardens to immediately follow. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 27, 2023, from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel. Arrangement by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Mary was born on August 25, 1930 in Berkeley County, South Carolina, daughter of Joseph Benjamin Ward and Ellen Saulisbury, Mary retired from C & S Bank, where she was a bank teller for more than 25 years, a job she truly loved. She had a way with the numbers and loved all other regular customers. She married the love of her life, "Mitch", at the young age of 19, and together they shared 64 years of wedded bliss. After their retirements and some years of convincing by Mitch, she bought into the idea of purchasing a motorhome, and several others. They traveled the U.S. trying to make it to all 50 States and along the way, they made several lifelong friends. Mary had a deep love for her church and was very spiritual. That spirituality, along with her loving family, helped her through the loss of her beloved husband in 2014. Mary did not love to cook - baking was her specialty. She loved delivering the home baked goods to family and friends. She loved to cross-stitch and be with her family as much as possible. Many a times she would just call from the driveway to say she was popping in. She was the greatest mom, the best grandmother, and the most caring friend. She touched so many lives in her 92 years and all who knew her and loved her, were truly blessed. She is survived by her two sons, Lamar Alan (Nicole Beaulieu) Mitchum, of Charleston, Glenn Wayne (Patricia) Mitchum of Atlanta; sister Ella May "Polly" Johnson; granddaughter, Lisa (Robert) Crusenberry; great-granddaughter, Eleanor and great-grandson, Everett. I am truly saddened to learn of Mrs. Mitchum´s passing. I have known her my entire life as she and Mr. Mitchum were close friends of my parents. I was hoping to get to Charleston this summer to visit her. She always called to check on my Mom after she moved to Tennessee in her last years. A lovely, lovely lady that was so proud of her family and was always eager to tell me about each of you. Prayers are being sent to you, Glenn, Lamar and your families.
