The relatives and friends of Martin Ahrens are invited to attend a "Celebration of Life" on Thursday, January 27, 2011, at the home of Tom Kays, 2294 Portside Way, Charleston, SC 29407 at 5p.m. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Martin was born November 5, 1933, in New Orleans, Louisiana, son of the late Edward Ahrens and Katherine Ahrens. Martin was a magnificently talented painter, especially in his ability to capture images in portraits so elegantly. He also was a mentor to so many of us, influencing untold numbers of Lowcountry artists for many years. An artist, a teacher, a policeman, an actor, a soldier, and a football player, Martin will be remembered as a New Orleans gentleman with the gift of colorful storytelling, and will be missed by countless artists, family and friends. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Joyce Hall Ahrens, co-owner of The Studio-the fine art school in West Ashley; his sister, Kitsey Zlenka; daughters, Alexzandria Weston and Leigh Maty; son, Ryan Ahrens; step-sons William Kuhn and Daniel Kuhn; step-daughters, Barbara Fulciniti and Nancy Olfky. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, his dearest friends Tom Kays and Larry Groft, and his faithful dogs Tar and Feather. I´m just seeing this now as I am passing down a painting I purchased from Martin at the end of an oil painting workshop in Jackson, Ms. A friend of mine and I were delighted with the instruction and quality of his workshop. I´m very sorry to know of his passing. Peace and love to his friends and family.

Joyce and family,
The loss of Martin is the loss of a loving, giving man who not only gave to you but to the community as well. His patience and humor will long be remembered along with his talent. A man for all seasons who lived life on his own terms.As Sinatra crooned "He did it his way!!"
With deepest sympathy,

Dick Crosby

The passing of Martin Ahrens is a seminal moment in the history of the Charleston art community. Martin was both an artisan and an artist of the highest order. His portraiture expressed a unique talent now gone from earth. There will never be another like him. His personable mentorship evoked the best in those around him. His tutelage is part and parcel of hundreds of art students whom emulated his abilities to reach into darkness to find the subtleness of light. His wife

You Raise Me Up"

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

There is no life - no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

You raise me up... To more than I can be.

Joyce, I just heard about Martin, and I am sorry for US that he's left. If everyone celebrated life like he did every day, the world would be a much more pleasant and fun place. What an incredible life he had here, and what a fantastic journey he is making!
