Margaret Brice Obituary

Margaret Brice Summerville - Margaret Lee Brice, 94, died Friday, December 25. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 16, at 11 am at Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting St., Charleston SC. Ms. Brice had been a resident of The Village (Presbyterian Homes of SC) since 2000. She was a native of Clinton, SC, and was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Connie M. Brice. She was an honors graduate of the Clinton High School Class of 1938. She received her Bachelor's Degree in English with honors from Winthrop College in 1942. At Winthrop, she was extremely active in all phases of student life and in college sports. She joined the staff of the then Charleston News and Courier as a news reporter immediately after her graduation from Winthrop. While employed with the paper, she covered a number of 'beats', including the Charleston Police Department, The Citadel, and the SC General Assembly. In 1946, she accepted a civilian job with the US Government as Public Affairs Officer at the Charleston Naval Base. In that capacity, she was the media contact at the base and also edited the base newspaper, "Bowhook". Her job there allowed her to meet and interact with many naval officials, governors, senators, and congressmen. After 30 years of dedicated service to the Navy, she retired in 1977. After retirement, she spent her summers at her second home at Lake Junaluska in her beloved North Carolina mountains. She continued working part-time after retirement as a free-lance newspaper reporter and as the newsletter editor for the Presbyterian Homes of South Carolina. During retirement, she was elected to the Charleston County School District Constituent Board of Trustees District #10 in St. Andrews and served one term. Ms. Brice was a lifelong member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston where she served faithfully for many years as a church Elder. She is survived by many loving relatives and close friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403 or to a charity of one's choice.
