M. Gilbert-Hardin Obituary

GILBERT-HARDIN, M. Passed On to Glory on the afternoon of February 18, 2007, Margaret Lanham-Hardin, widow of Frank D. Hardin and Jerry P. Gilbert. She lived on James Island, SC. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services Thursday, February 22, 2007 at two o'clock in the Rockville Presbyterian Church on Wadmalaw Island. She will be buried and will have an additional memorial service in Columbia, SC, at a later date. Mrs. Hardin was raised on a farm in Maple City, Michigan, the daughter of John Lanham and Mary Agnes Hawk. She received her RN degree at Wayne State College and practiced nursing at Butterworth Hospital where her first two children were born. She retired as a psychiatric nurse at the Columbia Area Mental Health Center. After retiring, she volunteered at the Women's Shelter in Columbia for a number of years. She was an avid gardener and loved creativity in all its forms. She was married to Jerry Gilbert for many years and had four children, and lived in Springfield IL and Columbia, SC. Jerry Gilbert died in 1977 and her second husband, Frank D. Hardin, retired from a distinguished career in adult education. Frank passed away in 1999. Five years ago Marge moved to the Charleston area to be closer to her daughter and dear friend Lisa, and there became an active member of the Harborview Presbyterian Church. She also enjoyed spending time at the Senior Center on James Island. She was an inspiration to many who know her, and her laughter brightened all of our days. She is survived by two daughters: Lisa G. Morris of Charleston, SC and Shelley G. McCarl of Boise, ID; two sons: Mark W. Gilbert of Columbia, SC and Brian P. Gilbert of Chattanooga, TN; two stepchildren: Mary M. Hardin of Raleigh, NC, and F. Donald Hardin, Jr. of Macon, GA; one brother, John Lanham and one sister, Dorothy Lanham both of Maple City, MI. She is also survived by nine grandchildren. The family request that donations be made in lieu of flowers to The Women's Shelter, 3425 North Main Street, Columbia, SC 29203.
