Luther Murphy Obituary

Luther Frank Murphy Jr. DORCHESTER,SC - Luther Frank "Luke" Murphy, Jr., age 72 of Dorchester, SC entered into eternal life on Monday, November 26, 2018 at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston after a long illness. The son of the late Luther Frank Murphy and Eva Novelle McKeever Murphy, he was born and raised in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. After graduating from Broken Bow High School, he served twenty years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1988. He then worked for JW Aluminum in Mount Holly, SC until 2011. A member of American Legion Post 172, the Submarine Veterans, and Heritage Holiness Church in Ladson, Mr. Murphy is survived by his loving wife, Judy H. Murphy; four step-children, Jelain Chubb of Austin, Texas, Tommy (Annette) Chubb of Dorchester, Delisa Chubb of Bell, Florida, and Teddy (Kary) Chubb of Honea Path, SC; two brothers, Louis Murphy of Chappell Hill, Texas and Bill (Thelma) Murphy of Texas; five grandchildren, Joseph, Marissa, Rylee, Savannah and Aidan Chubb; and a large extended family and many dear friends. The family will receive condolences from 6 to 8 PM, Wednesday, November 28 at Heritage Holiness Church, 3836 Ladson Road. Funeral services will be Thursday, November 29 at 11 AM at the church, with interment following at Summerville Cemetery, 130 West 1st North Street. Flowers will be accepted at the church or memorials may be made to Heritage Holiness Church or the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. The family of Mr. Murphy wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and the Palliative Care Team at Patriots' Harbor for the loving and compassionate care they provided Luke and his family during this time. On behalf of our Board of Directors, Staff and Membership, I offer our condolences to the family of shipmate Luther Frank Murphy, Jr. We salute and thank Luke for his 20 years of service to his country in our nation's submarine force, retiring as a Navy Chief Petty Officer in 1988. A copy of his obituary will be placed in the file of deceased submariners at our Museum. Rest your oars good and faithful servant, we now have the watch sailor. You now have the eternal fair winds and following seas you earned during your time here on earth. God Bless you for your service, and may his love and grace comfort your wife Judy and all of your family and friends left behind.

There is no expiration date on the back of our dolphins and Luke, who earned his 'fish' when he qualified on USS NATHAN HALE SSBN 623 in 1970, will always be remembered as a Brother of the Phin and a great Patriot.
