Lucille Stovall Matthews MARTINSVILLE, VA - Lucille Stovall Matthews of Martinsville, VA entered her eternal rest on Monday, March 12, 2012 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County, Martinsville, VA. She was born on December 31, 1921 in Spray (now Eden), NC to the late George Thomas Stovall and Georgia Martin Stovall Taylor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John B. Matthews, in 1995; two daughters, Jennifer Lynne Matthews and Laura Matthews Vassar Craig; a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynne Vassar; four sisters, Billie Jane Reed, Agnes June Stovall, Glory Mae Stovall and Louise S. Graham; half-sister, Nancy Powell and step-brother, Charles A. Taylor. She graduated from Fieldale High School, with honors, in 1939 and worked for Fieldcrest, which later became Pillowtex, for 16 years. Mrs. Matthews left Martinsville in 1955 to be with her husband who was a 30 year career Marine. After he retired, they moved to Charleston, SC to make their home. She retired as Clerk of the Family Court in Charleston, SC and then she and her husband returned to Martinsville in 1990. Mrs. Matthews was a member of the Starling Avenue Baptist Church, where she was a former Director of Senior Adult Fellowship, a member of the Grace Taylor/Dan Dalton Sunday School Class and served in numerous other functions of the church. Also, she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post # 11. Surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, George T. Stovall and Josephine Stovall of Atlanta, GA; brothers-in-law, James Graham and Charles E. Reed, Jr. both of Martinsville, VA; sister-in-law, Nancy Barnes of Martinsville, VA; grandson, Damon Matthew Vassar of Moncks Corner, SC; half-sister and brother-in-law, Judy Rodgers and William Rodgers of Florida; three great- grandchildren, Tiffanie L. A. Vassar of Goose Creek, SC, Ashley Morgan and Damon Matthew Vassar, II both of Moncks Corner, SC; a very special nephew, James A. Crigger, Sr. of Martinsville, VA; and numerous nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews and cousins. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2012 at Norris Funeral Services Martinsville Chapel with Dr. David Adkins officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
