Lucile was born on July 30, 1920, and was the daughter of Dr. Thomas Rucker Gaines and Lucile Roberts Talmadge Gaines. She was preceded in death by her husband, Murdock MacKenzie MacLennan and her sister, Gloria Gaines Klugh. Lucile grew up in Anderson, South Carolina, where she graduated from Girls High. She received a BA in French from Agnes Scott College and taught high school prior to her marriage in 1945. Her oft visited wildflower garden in The Crescent which had over 250 species of plants was her pride and joy. She was one of the first recipients of the Horticultural Society's 1830 award, and Mayor John Tecklenberg recognized April 12 as "Lucile MacLennan" day. A scholarship for Horticultural Studies at Trident Technical College was established in her honor. This year on her 101st birthday, she received the Order of the Palmetto, the state of South Carolina's highest civilian honor. In addition to her many contributions to horticulture, Lucile served on the Charleston Association for the Blind and was a member of the Century Club and the Laura Bragg book club. I loved her so much!! She taught me so many things. About life and the Lord. We would have Bible study and tea bright and early before we started working. She would say she was here from Almighty God to encourage other's. And that she did. I know she is in peace with Her Savior Jesus Christ. I love you more than you can imagine. Forever in my heart until we see each other again. Thank you so much for my Bible and the inscription you put in there for me. God blessed me and everyone that knew you. See you soon. It will be like no time had passed and it will be a glorious day to see you again!!

Dear Margaret and family,

Blount and I just heard about Lucille. I am so sorry to hear this but your Mother lived a long and incredible life. She was my inspiration. I was so glad that Blount and I were able to come to her birthday party this year. I also spoke with her afterwards by phone.

Our prayers are with you all- Joanne and Blount and family

What a blessing she was in my life.
I'm sorry I didn't find out until yesterday afternoon.

She always talked about her husband, and I'm sure they are rejoicing once again.

Mrs. Lucile McLennan was a bright light that loved her Dentist and staff. She would enter the office and announce her arrival and go room to room to say good morning. She always shared her faith and her joy for life. She always found something kind to say and gave us all a feeling of hope. Her spunk at 100 years old and the delightment in know she was still moving on was enough to say well I hope I can be like that. Lucile, you were a wonderful blessing and you will be missed.

Had I know of sweet Lucile's death, I would have come to Charleston! Lucile was my mother's life long best friend. I believe Lucile told me that her daughter Margaret was named for my mother Margaret Fant Lipscomb. They were girlhood friends, in each other's weddings and loved each other all of their lives. Each of these precious ladies had a tradition of calling each other on their respective birthdays. When my mama died, Lucile transferred that tradition to me! Each year she called me on my mother's birthday and I had the honor of calling her on her birthday. She used to tell me that my voice sounded like my mother's voice. I loved Lucile dearly. I am so sorry that I did not learn of her service arrangements until one hour before they were scheduled- too late to make the trip to Charleston. I loved her strong witness to her Lord and Savior. She was a remarkable, beautiful lady. I take great comfort in knowing that my mother and Lucile are rejoicing in the presence of their Saviour. Someday I would love to know Lucile's and Mac's children I would like to tell them personally how much their mother meant to me!

When Jackson (Hamrick) was born, Lucile was the first visitor at our home. Fitz and I were so happy that she came over to see him. He was sleeping, and I could tell she was disappointed, but she firmly refused to wake or move a sleeping baby. Over the years I was continually impressed by her faith and loyalty. She will be missed, but was always such a powerful life force. I am glad to have known her.

Miss Lucile was one of the most remarkable and unique persons I have ever had the privilege of knowing. She was well into her 90's when I met her. I can only imagine the force of nature she must have been when she had even more energy as a younger woman. What a breath of fresh air! So we'll read and inquisitive regarding life. She was much of what I aspire to be as I reach old age. My condolences to the family on the loss of a giant.

I arise up and call Lucile blessed. She exemplified the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31:30, "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised." Lucile modeled love of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by "speaking the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15) and being "strong and very courageous" (Joshua 1:7). May the Lord comfort your dear family. Much love, Mary Ann

Lucile was a truly amazing lady. My wife Erwin and I were privileged to have known her as neighbor and friend. Charleston has lost a shining light, but Lucile is with the angels now and our loss is their gain.
