Louis Marcell Obituary

Louis Duplantis Marcell DENVER, CO - Louis Duplantis Marcell, age 35, died unexpectedly on January 28th, in Denver, Colorado. Born in Charleston on January 13, 1989, Louis attended Ashley River Elementary School, the School of the Arts, West Ashley High School, and was a political science major at the College of Charleston. He worked several years in Charleston hospitality and also helped launch a business retrieving sunken logs. Most recently, Louis earned a paralegal degree at Pikes Peak College and worked as a paralegal in Colorado Springs and Denver, representing his firm at the Denver Council on Foreign Relations and helping to restart a Young Professionals group in Denver. As a youth, Louis was a member of Circular Congregational Church and an active participant in the Scouting program, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He loved hiking, camping, and surfing, history and politics, bad movies, anything by George R.R. Martin, dogs, his family and his friends. Music was a constant in his life, which ended with a few more violins and guitars than he really needed. All would describe Louis as smart, humorous, stubborn, loving, very kind and generous, with his close friends and family noting that he preferred to take care of others before taking care of himself. Louis' ongoing challenge was a solitary addiction to alcohol that only reinforced a sense of loneliness and sadness. His death was ultimately due to seizures induced by alcohol withdrawal, sadly occurring shortly before beginning a new rehab program. Louis' last act of kindness was an earlier decision to be an organ donor, which is making a better life possible for others. Louis is survived and deeply missed by his parents, JoAnne and Michael Marcell; his sister Anna Marcell; grandmother, Naomi Kellum Monier; aunts; uncles; cousins; and many close friends in Charleston, SC. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, February 17th, at Circular Congregational Church, 150 Meeting St., Charleston, with a reception following. Memorial gifts may be made to either Circular Church or WakeUp Carolina.

Dear Mike and Joanne,
Pam Tisdale told me about your loss and I just wanted to express my condolences. I, of course didn't know Louis well but knowing how devastated both of you must be prompted me to write this brief message. There is nothing I can say to comfort you but I just wanted you to know that I care too about your loss.

Mike, JoAnne and Anna,
Our prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. Louis was a joy to be around and I remember on some campouts, Louis and other scouts would have political discussions that were a blast to listen to. Precious memories for all of us. I cannot imagine what y'all are going through but please know that y'all are in our prayers and the love of God is with you.
Sincerely,
The David & Karen McLaurin Family

Mike and JoAnne,

My heart is aching for you with this loss. The world certainly feels empty, unnaturally so, when one of our children leaves us. It is a hole so unique and powerful it can feel like the darkness pulls you in. I hope you are able to find light and strength in each other and with Anna, and from your friends and community who mourn this loss with you.
